The forums confuse me now (as if they didn’t before) but I understand medical topic belong here now?
If so, I would (please) like to start up a rational debate about medical marijuana.
A little personal history: I have servere anxiety/depression and at least one suicide attempt (though I doubt there will ever be another). I have done and tried everything and am 45. Due to a heart attack at age (40) overeating - but 40 years of un-diagnosed severe anxiety and depression will do that.
Anyway, the point of this thread is to discuss the potential positive effects of medical marijuana in general, and specific to my condition.
I understand that in California at least, depression is a valid reason to get a medical marijuana license. Now, in Washingston State they require different criteria: Mainly, if you are depressed or anxious, what is called intractable pain (pain that does not respond to conventional treatment. I tried SNRIs and they did treat the pain, but doubled my blood pressure and increased my anxiety.
I then got a license for medical marijuana which has been a god send.
I am in long term disability. I know there are (some/many/a few) out there who do not believe in mental illness, much less the use of 'recreational" drugs to treat it. Hence, I thought it worth discussing - especially considering the recent federal ruling refusing to change to class of the drug to one with (ANY) medical benifits).
BTW - the fact that my F*ING spell checker can’t come up with the correct spelling of Bennifit from BENNIFIT is stupid. Whatever.
My quality of life would be markedly lower without medical marijuana; for the conditions I use it to treat it is a godsend. My spinal-cord injury was/is complicated in it’s nature and left me with many unique physical conditions/issues which doctors (and their host of traditional medicines) were by and large unable to successfully address. Not only does it help with some of those, namely temperature regulation and overall cooling among others, but marijuana is a crucial component in my migraine prophylaxis program. It is one of 5 medications, any of which get taken out of cycle and the migraines return.
I don’t think you’ll get much of a debate on this board; between the die-hard liberals and the internet libertarians, outright legalization is the consensus position.
I have a medical condition (chronic pain) that would qualify for medical marijuana. However, my state does not permit it.
I’ve never used marijuana myself, and I am very interested in doing so. Just to see if it relieves the pain I suffer 24 hour/day. The medical establishment has no problem with me taking a host of narcotic pain relievers, but I am concerned about the long term effects. I know smoking marijuana also has long term issues, but they can’t be worse than what I’m taking now.
Is the drug’s active component able to be delivered in a pill form? If so, why could that not be an option for folks whose Dr’s want them to try Marijuana, but it’s not legal to grow or sell in the state? Couldn’t a pill with (is it THC?) be created and prescribed by a doctor?
I have never read or heard any story about the negatives of using marijuana to ease the pain and suffering of those that take it. I sure would like to have a chance to be one of those people. If I have a bad reaction, I’d stop taking it. But I hate taking pills, which have so many side effects that it’s a toss up whether I want to take the medicine or not.
Symptoms of overdose may include:
inappropriate happiness
That’s kinda funny.
Anyways, I remember back when I first heard about it, I read reports from people (probably on Erowid, so these people were probably taking recreational doses rather then therapeutic doses) saying they actually got TOO high for TOO long and preferred to just smoke the stuff. A few years later I managed to acquire a few pills, but they were old, low dose and store improperly (on their way to be disposed) and we didn’t get any kind of buzz from them.
ETA, as of right now, it’s still listed on Walgreen’s website, so I assume they carry it, but you could always call ahead if you’re not sure.
Sorry about that. Stink"y" was a typo. No offense intended but I did have too laugh.:smack:
I was fishing for crab this afternoon and our bait in the pots was Stink----y.
I do not know if Marinol is available where you live or anywhere else for that matter… Just trying to point you in the right direction.
It seems like here in the US; most taxpayers agree that pot should be legal and be taxed.
The Feds will not give up the funding for the “War on Drugs”
I hang out on one of the largest marijuana boards online - called grasscity [go figure] and there is a fair amount of discussion of marinol and the various chemicals in weed. One main consensus is that marinol is fairly ineffective as the 3 main chemical suits are more complex than just stripping out one chemical. [Which is also the argument of natural herbal medication vs the synthesized versions]
I use it for pain control, migraines and an odd tremula that one of the US lead researchers into Parkinsons assures me is not Parkinsons [but we are keeping a close eye on it] it is better than the current accepted prescriptions [though when a migrain hits and MMJ can not whip it I do go to frovatriptan]
I would have killed for it the 2 times I did chemo … but I had a vested interest in keeping my security clearances and jobs. Now I am unemployed scum I dont care …
Medical questions of the “please help diagnose me while I wait for my doctor’s appointment to come around” sort belong over in IMHO - same with legal questions of that nature. Medical debates could go here or Great Debates.
I thought it was not so much about easing the nausea, but about creating hunger (munchies) to counteract the lack of hunger nausea can create. If someone isn’t eating, MJ is a great way to get them to bury their face in a bag of Lays.
And marijuana-aided eating in the face of overwhelming nausea is anything but the typical “munchies” that one thinks of when they think of pot-induced hunger. You simply go from being unable to even imagine putting food anywhere near your mouth to being able to manage getting enough sustenance down to keep yourself conscious.
Cannabis can temporarily cause a drop in blood pressure, so if it’s a dizzy, light-headed queasy kind of nausea, it could be that.
I have low blood pressure and if I have to get up in the middle of the night to pee or something I’ll get light-headed and nauseous and have to sit down quick before I pass out and/or throw up. I never have passed out or thrown up that way, but it sure feels like I’m about to.
Dude, out of context this sounds soo awesomely fun.
RE the OP: yeah, legalize regulate tax sell and control it for recreational use, synthesize or extract and condense into pill form for medical use. stop the friggin war on my wallet, er I mean drugs
For me it causes migraines so just thinking about using it for migraine relief makes my skull ache. It’s like any other drug - people react differently to it. The key is finding what works for you. That’s of course complicated in this instance by years of illegality.
I have known some clients with anxiety who have had it exacerbated by marajuana - you might want to keep a running journal of your anxiety level. If you notice more nightmares that might also be an indication that regular pot use isn’t working for you.
