Medical Police on Netflix

When I first saw the trailer on Netflix I just thought it was some cheesy medical drama. It took a couple of times of having the trailer shoved in my face before I realized it’s a comedy show.

I was about three glasses of wine in when I clicked on the show, so that may have helped, but I found it to be quite funny. Rob Corddry in clown make up was cracking me the hell up. Along with the over the top parodies of Grey’s Anatomy, and the like.

Anybody else watch?

I’ve watched the first episode, will get around to the rest later. Not brilliant, not awful.

Got about ten minutes in to the first ep and shut it off. Stupid and unfunny.

I didn’t like it. 1 1/2 episodes was more than enough.

I watched the first episode and found it painfully unfunny. It seemed like an amateurish knockoff of Angie Tribeca.

Well darn. Maybe it was the wine then. lol

I watched the whole thing a couple of days ago. A meant-to-be dumb comedy, not great, but it had some funny moments. I liked Jason Schwartzman as the RV-driving “Goldfinch” who saves the day more than once.

For a comedy whose central premise is that it’s a drama that’s not quite right, there was something that wasn’t quite right about it.

Angie Tribeca, already mentioned, is in the same vein but seems to have got it right much more. I share the not bad but not great verdict. A few good laughs but it wasn’t brave enough to push into more absurdist territory, which I think would have helped it. But I stuck with it to the end, which I don’t do with every Netflix show.

I haven’t watched it yet, but your description makes it sound like “Children’s Hospital,” that ran on Adult Swim.

Yes, it seems to be Childrens Hospital (no apostrophe) 2. I don’t remember too much about it except that it was very bizarre, so I don’t know if it’s an unworthy successor re: above comments or just too bizarre for most people.

Saw a few episodes. The very bad acting turned me off. But if it is a comedy, maybe they were just intensionally being bad actors. And I should give it a second chance. But, with wine.

Add me to the camp that found it painfully unfunny. It struck me as very amateurish. The actors don’t strike me as natural comics. Their timing is off and their delivery is flat.

The jokes are largely dull and uninspired. And the “serious” scenes that move the plot along are just boring.

I don’t think a push into more absurdist territory would have helped. The writers and actors just don’t seem to have the chemistry to make this work. I contrast this to shows like Brooklyn 99, which I don’t think are going for a more absurd tone but still work great because the performances and chemistry are there. Absurdist shows like Green Wing work too but I can’t see the producers of this show having the capability of pulling that off.

All in all, surprisingly bad, I wasn’t sure they still made shows this amateurish. I’m surprised they didn’t pull the plug earlier.

It’s intentional, they parody cop/doctor serials.

Thanks, don’t see much TV.

I like parodies. But, I think the wine is a good idea.

Childrens Hospital (and now Medical Police, I guess) is deliberately amateurish and bizarre and its sense of humor appeals to a very niche audience. I like the talent involved and enjoy the little of it I’ve seen. It’s been nominated for and won Emmy’s.

What you’re looking at when it comes to Medical Police may be failing to connect, but it’s definitely not coming from dull minds.
