Medieval-style architecture in NY/NJ area

Hey all,

So I’m looking for some medieval styled architecture in the NJ/NY area for a film I’m working on. Specifically a church or a structure that would resemble a church. I need an exterior that would be acceptable as well as an interior corridor and/or altar that could easily double as being from the middle ages. Our last location pulled out at the last minute and we are in need of something in the next few days. I realize how rare this kind of thing is in the area but I’m running our of ideas at this point. The crew is willing to travel a bit if we find one exterior that works and another interior somewhere else.

Preferably in New Jersey but willing to travel out a bit into New York if necessary

Thanks in advance for any help. The stress of this crunch time is immense but I’m optimistic.

try the cloisters, just over the GW bridge

If you mean to “double as being from the Middle Ages”, then yeah the Cloisters is your closest thing to an attempt at authentic reproduction of medieval architecture I can think of in the NYC area.

If you meant “medieval styled architecture” as in stylistic touches for ambiance for a latter-day setting, there are a couple more I can think of.

Where was your NJ location? If you can post a link or a pic that would be helpful.

I do mean double as a medieval structure. My original locale was the Garrett Chapel in Bluff Point, NY. Google image search that name to get a sense of what I need as the main site link has few photos. The rest of my shoot is in NJ so I’d rather keep it there if possible. I was only going to travel so far because this place was absolutely perfect.

I’ve left a message for the people who run the cloisters but I don’t think getting permission for shooting there is all that easy.

FYI this is a student project.

Why don’t you use this site

and the list of locales on this page

If the Cloisters are too expensive, there’s the Castle on the Hudson, a medieval gothic mansion, once a girls’ school, now a small hotel and fine restaurant, in Tarrytown, 20 miles north of Manhattan.

Merriwood Castle in Highland Park, NJ. :

There’s also this one, which appears to be the same place. It used to have an art gallery in it:

And you can lease it by the month!

It’s here, too, partway down the page:

Try this page for other castles:

Much of The Cloisters were moved from Europe to NYC. They are, in fact, medieval buildings.

Why not call the local Catholic and Episcopalian dioceses and ask?

There are several churches in the DC area that could pass as medieval if you get the shot right. The NYC area is probably the same.

Not nearly as good as your original location, but how about the Glen Ridge Congregational Church?

Lambert Castle

Union Congregational Church - Montclair

The two castles rely on state funds and should be hurting for cash thanks to the thoughtful efforts of our beloved governor and chief beltway-pawn Chris Christie.
