Meenie7's invisible friend

But she also claims she cuddles up to him at night and has kissed him…what else could he be?

It’s not exactly easy to cuddle up to and kiss a noncoporeal entity, unless we’re talking something like the end of Ghost. If she’s using “it’s a ghost” to explain a real voice of unidentified origin, this could be a way of rationalizing it.

I’m just wondering if she could be the victim of some ridiculously elaborate practical joke.

No. I know you all like to think of yourselves as very important but I doubt I could name 20 dopers off the top of my head. Unless someone says something profound, I generally don’t pay attention to usernames. And pardon me for being such a dabbler but I don’t read every thread here. Pathetic, I know. Hurts my ad homs that you guys are so fond of, but c’est la vie.

I’ll take you at your word that his lies weren’t trolling, but it’s not a direct analogue. A troll is someone who posts things that are controversial. They probably don’t have to be lies in all cases, but being lies certainly makes it worse. This thread is pretty clear evidence that meanie7’s lies are controversial. She is a troll.

EDIT: “A troll is someone who posts things that are controversial*.”

*in a deliberately provocative way. Because I know someone will dig for an example of a controversial post that isn’t trolling unless I qualify my statement to death.

I say a troll is someone who deliberatly tries to stir shit; meanie appears to be trying not to stir shit. YMOV.

I’m sure that’s valid from your point of view, but from my point of view she’s stirred 4 pages worth of shit.

I hope you don’t mean this thread, because she didn’t start it.

Right. She just posted enough lies to get it going, and then stoked the fires with her poor lil ol’ me act.

Maybe Marcus took over Diogenes’ body and forced him to write the OP.

I don’t know what her reasons where for relaying those stories, but she sounds incredibly lonely and the details of the story are so conveniently vague and particular in all the right places. The thread was played like a cold reading in reverse. She gave out names, then people supplied the data to match the common descriptions for her! This ghost from 1818, who at 18 (what’s with all the 18s?) killed him self in a strikingly Romeo and Juliet fashion, now goes around to cineplexes to see Iron Man and WALL-E? He’s come to meenie7 just when she needed him the most, and “tells” her that she is the ancestor of his one true love, the very love he offed himself for out of intense grief, and that she reminds him of this Anna. The trite and glurgy sentiment of this alone sounds like a fantasy of a 14 year old girl. meenie7 is lonely and can’t keep any friends. Perhaps there’s a reason? Now she’s made up a fantasy she can delude herself with, and somehow she ended up believing her own BS to the point where she’s arguing the veracity of it on a message board devoted to fighting ignorance with strangers.

She also claims to be a skeptic. Skeptics ask questions, but she’s done none of this. In her long conversations and make-out sessions with “Marcus”, she’s only managed to get his name, the time he lived, his fate, and a few movie reviews? I could go on, but it’s just too damn silly. I agree with DtC, the humoring was not the proper responses for the SDMB: MPSIMS, GD or otherwise. It’s sad to see, and sad to see people nudging her on like that.

That said, meenie7, being a self-proclaimed skeptic, why haven’t you put yourself through the simple questions and small experiments it takes to verify whether or not this is a real ghost, or something in your head? At least prove this to yourself. You owe it to you.*
*That is if you’re not afraid to learn the truth.

I fail to see how somoene who says

and

is deliberately trying to stir shit. The latter, in particular, indicates that is what she wants to avoid.

hmm? Maybe Marcus is making everything up and deluding poor Meenie because he is in fact a regular guy that is Invisible! See, lots more reasons.

Posting that you’re hanging out with and kissing ghosts at the Dope, is like sticking a weed-whacker in a toilet full of turds.

Yeah, because no one would say they wouldn’t have done something if they didn’t mean it.

Oh, cool, I read that Goosebumps book, too.

I must of missed that. Is there a link to a thread dismissing his stories as fiction?

Most of my posts directed to you in this thread are inappropriate and uncalled for, not to mention being a hijack. I apologize.

Wow. Thanks.

You don’t see a real difference between adolescent (away at camp, even) having an imaginary friend and an adult having one? really?

A client of mine believed there were little men inside her head causing her head to spontaneously jerk from side to side every now and then. She was absolutely convinced of it. She was saving up $$ to get a cat scan which she knew would prove her right. I thought they should have given her the cat scan so she could (maybe) attempt to deal w/her delusions. 'cause until she recognized they were delusions, they weren’t gonna go away.

On the other hand, I don’t for a moment believe that other posters on a message board would have been able to get through to her, either (had there been an internet back then). So, on the actual subject here, I don’t think any post will convince this person that they’re not experiencing what they believe they are experiencing (should they not be fucking w/us in the first place, and actually believe).

Descendant, you mean. After all, we should cling desperately to the few realistic elements we have.
I don’t see why meenie’s claimed beliefs have to be treated any differently than lekatt’s claimed beliefs, and her personality is not nearly (from what I’ve seen) as annoying as his. His not-infrequent pittings are for his behaviour, not his beliefs. When meenie starts injecting Marcus anecdotes into random GD threads, that’ll be a basis for a pitting, I figure.

Exactly. And I never would, because this is not the type of attention anyone with any sense wants. By the time I joined the Dope, I’d already known Marcus for more than a year, and I never mentioned him til now. I can go just as long again once these threads die down.
