Meerschaum?

All,

I have a meerschaum pipe that I'd like to find a buyer for. It's beautiful and has never been smoked out of. I inherited it from my parents who bought it in the late 60's in Ankara, Turkey. It's approximately 15 inches long and the bowl is an intricately carved Jesus.

First off, I’d like to know if anyone has experience with these. I’d also like to know how to get it appraised.

Any ideas?

About 25 years ago I was in Turkey (which is where most Meerschaums come from) and did quite a bit of research at the time. Meerschaum aficionados prefer those that are NOT intricately carved, since the carving is usually done to hide defects. But don’t try to tell that to Americans. They are going to want the fancy stuff.

You should be able to go to any pipe/cigar/tobacco store and get some idea of what it is worth. They might even sell it on consignment for you.
