Mega Crib - Extreme Cribbage

My father-in-law’s buddies play a version of Cribbage they call Mega-Crib. The rules are pretty much identical to Cribbage rules, except each hand (and the crib) is 6 cards instead of 4, and due to the large number of points scored, you have to go around the Cribbage board twice to win.

I find it a more compelling game than regular Cribbage, and it’s thrilling to get a great hand that can score anywhere from 40 to 72 points. If you like finding 15s, there’s plenty of opportunity. The biggest hand you can have is two 4s, two 5s and two 6s, with a 5 in the cut. That’s 26 points in fifteens, a 36 point run, and 10 points for the two pair and trips.

Anyway, I started this thread for two reasons. One, to find out if any Dopers out there have ever heard of or played this variant. Second, if it sounds intriguing, and you can find someone to play it with you, go play it and come back and tell me what you think of it. Also, if you play it and any questions come up, post them here and I’ll try to answer.

If you are going to play, remember: for two players, each player gets nine cards and throws three to the crib; for three players, eight cards each and throw two to the crib; for four players, seven cards each, throw one to the crib, plus throw two from the deck to the crib.

Enjoy!

Wow. No, I’ve never heard of it, and I grew up on cribbage. I am a purist, though, and I can’t abide even three-handed. I’ll have to puzzle this out and see if I can figure out some of the scoring. Wonder if you can make an online cribbage site play this?

Sounds fun, and no I’ve never heard of it. Will have to try it next time I play.

Same here…never heard of it, and will try it out with the wife next time.

We have our family version of extreme cribbage. I made the board about 25 years ago, only 10 or so complete games have been played. The board will support 10 players and the first to 1001 is the winner. It takes about 8 hours to play with 10 players, with this many players good hands are far and few between. The board has 10,011 holes and I drilled every single one by hand.

Hey racer72, how about a pic and some measurements of this board?

Not played crib for a while - when I played it was strictly old game, five cards. Six card cribbage would be an innovation, nine card is the martians have landed.

Any excuse to dust off the crib board though, I’ll see if my wife remembers the game and give it a whirl.

I played with the guys yesterday, four-handed. My partner had two 4s, two 5s and two 6s in his hand, I had three Jacks, a Queen and two Kings. The cut came up a Queen. That gave my partner 50 points and I had 47 (with Nibs). A 97-point combo! We almost skunked our opponents in that game, I’ll tell you.

The board was about 4 feet by 2 feet. It was made from a scrap piece of paneling (the ugly crap people use to put on their walls) with a frame made of 1 by 2’s. I can’t find any pictures at this time and the board is at my brother’s house, I will get a picture the next time I visit him. I made a template out of a 1/8" piece of aluminum, it allowed me to drill the holes 100 at a time without having to measure the location of each. The only cost I had in making the board was buying the pegs.
