Weazel News: Confirming Your Prejudices
I searched and didn’t see a new thread but I did find this one with an appropriate title all ready and waiting so…Kelly absent from show following blackface comments!
I saw a blurb yesterday or the day before about Megan Kelly making blackface comments on her show and now I see this article, with these tidbits (helpfully bolded):
Oh no! Where will she peddle her hate and lies and bullshit now?
Maybe Alex Jones can make some room for her at InfoWars, or maybe Glenn Beck over at The Blaze…
Even discussing a topic and sharing an anecdote is enough to get in trouble at work? Where’s that pc run amok thread?
When your job is to do lighthearted entertainment and you drift off into how in the “good ol days” it was OK to be offensive, well…yeah.
I’m guessing that you’re incapable of understanding that.
What discussion? She said blackface was acceptable.
I try to never lose sight of the fact that conservatives that hate Trump are still conservatives. We may hold common ground on one issue, andd it’s a big one - but I still disagree with them on most everything else.
Newsflash – there are other people in workplaces, and the things you say might have an impact on those other people. Especially if your job is public-facing, and you have an audience to dealth. Of course the things you say might affect how you are treated at work. It boggles the mind that anyone could think that one shouldn’t suffer consequences no matter what one says at work (or elsewhere).
Bye-bye, bitch. I look forward to you being dumped out the bottom of the porn industry in a few years.
Daily Mail is reporting that she is out at NBC… and NBC gets to eat the entire $69m cost of her contract.
Haven’t seen a second citation on this, btw.
Will say, if NBC pays her the $69 million and she has to remain off the air for the duration of the contract, then NBC gave us all a very welcome early Christmas present.
Wait, so I can’t share amusing anecdotes about strippers and prostitutes while I am at work?
PC RUN AMOK!
Well, I think it’s ok if you are a stripper or a prostitute.
Hmmmmmm…(ponders career change).
The tips are small…but the money is good.
This is the kind of thing that I hate. The context of her recent comment was about dressing up as people you admire for Halloween, and if that person is black, what’s wrong with darkening your skin? Diana Ross was the example she was giving.
Now let’s be clear. She is wrong. Blackface has a long tradition of being used to mock people of color. She should know this, and know that because of this it’s not socially acceptable. Her comment was wrong and stupid.
She was not being deliberately racist though.
On an interview I saw Jaimie Fox talked about Robert Downey Jr. wearing blackface for Tropic Thunder, and about comedians who go too far and cross the line with their comments.
Jaimie said (my paraphrase,). There are people that are out to get you. There are people that hate you. Those are the people you go after, not artists, or actors, or comedians who make a slip or push a boundary. They are not out to get you.
Megan Kelly was not trying to hurt anybody. She was not promoting racism. She is simply a twit.
This gotcha moment where she is going to get nailed to the cross by the enlightened masses for her racism and insensitivity is contemptible.
Go fight the enemy.
She is going to get fired from a low-rated talk/news show because of her insensitivity. It’s not exactly a heavy cross.
Near as I can tell, there’s a difference between blackface and makeup which resembles a person of another race. The old-time minstrels wearing blackface didn’t resemble actual black people; they resembled a distorted, racist caricature of black people, and used it as a context to perform racist acts, and that’s what made it offensive. What Kelly is describing is completely different from that.
Now, I can see that the two are likely to be conflated, and so someone with a modicum of historical awareness should probably also avoid the sort of makeup Kelly is describing, so as to avoid offensiveness by association. But I’m still not sure that that’s the sort of offense that one should be fired over, especially not when she’s done so many other offensive things and gotten away with them.
She was criticized and mocked for her idiocy, and that seems perfectly appropriate to me (say something idiotic, and people will treat you like an idiot for a little while). But I think her apology was decent, and it doesn’t appear that she’s getting fired for this (and I don’t think this warrants firing, considering her apology). If her role is changing in the network, that’s most likely because her show sucks and gets terrible ratings.
Why should she have to apologize? Why is this even a thing?
She is a twit. Her job is to be a twit. She literally says stupid things, and people correct her and explain the subtleties. That is her modus operandi. The audience gets to have things explained to them through the dialectic.
Why would anybody be angry and go after for this?
It’s a pile on, it’s bullying from the 3rd grade. We’ll pick out the person who makes a mistake and deviates from the complex and esoteric rules that compromise the social norm.
Ignorance is not a defense. Her ignorance isn’t accidental, it’s a product of her disinterest in the topic. A disinterest only blunted by the fact that her big paycheck was put in jeopardy.
