If what I heard was correct, it’s not only in Sanskrit and Latin, but there will be NO SUBTITLES.

Not only is he making it, he’s already finished filming it.

I saw some pictures from the set in a magazine (People, I think) and it looks pretty bloody.

Hebrew, Aramaic, and Latin. Kind of too far west for Sanskrit.

Madness.

Mel’s a uber Catholic AFAIK.

hellfire leonard!

There was a thread a while ago about Mel and his dad’s loony outlooks, but I tried a search on it and came up blank . . .

Mel and “Jesus” Jim Caviezel have been turning up in interviews on EWTN (Catholic TV) talking about the flick.

I watched Mel’s interview because it seemed so strange for him to be on a channel devoted to the mainstream Catholic Church considering his beliefs about post-Vatican II Catholicism. The most they went into about his differences with the church, was to briefly mention that he attended a church that said the Latin Mass. Mel casually refered to it as a preference, like it was a aesthetic choice only. Which seemed a little disingenuous, since according to the NYTimes article that led to the thread Eve mentioned, Mel had the church built and is its sole financial benefactor.

Here’s the thread in question:"Mel Gibson’s Pa–Nuttier Than a Stuckey’s Log

Please work link, I’m tired of screwing these things up…

My wife is actually looking forward to this movie. Gotta admit: he didn’t take the easy road, that’s for sure. Aramaic?

Thanks, widdershins—I swear I did a search on “Gibson” and came up blank!

Well, yeah, Aramaic. It’s what Christ spoke. It’d be hard to make a movie envisioned like this one without Aramaic.

Mel’s dad’s a lot nuttier than Mel, according to snopes.

It was in The Pit, I did a search on “Gibson passion catholic vatican”.

Glad to do my humble part to help a lady out. No one will ever mistake me for a true gentleman, but we do what we can.

I will probably see it, although I doubt it will be in wide release so I may have to rent it.

I know Catholics who prefer the Latin Mass, although I personally don’t know any who feel that Vatican II was a mistake.

I think it sounds cool, and I hope it doesn’t suck the way John Travolta’s tribute to his religious beliefs did (Battlefield Earth was written by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology).

“but there will be NO SUBTITLES”
Yes, that is the truly amazing part. That said, I am quite curious about the film and will probably see it if it gets decent reviews.

Those of you who plan on seeing it; do you feel it will be obvious what is happening, since the story is so familiar?

Just what I was going to suggest, Revtim. Among the Christian audience, evening among the non-practicing, there’s no story more familiar (other than possibly The Wizard of Oz!). If the script follows the gospels without any interpolated scenes, it shouldn’t be hard to follow what’s going on.

It should be noted that although he is the director, Mel is not appearing in the film.

It should also be noted, for you non-religious types, that Monica Bellucci will be playing Mary Magdalene.

The sheer audacity of its concept guarantees that this film will either be fantastic beyond belief or will suck on a cosmic scale. I’ll definitely go see it, to find out which.

I remember hearing a few years ago on NPR that Aramaic was dying out as a language, particularly the dialect Josh is believed to have spoken.

How did they find enough knowledgeable people to put the thing together?

One word: money. Mel’s got it, this is his baby, so I’m sure he brought the full force of his resources to bear on this project of is. I admit I’m intrigued and may try to see it if it’s ever released in a place I can get to. What is it called? PASSION?
