I will admit that when I was a lot younger I thought the mothers of celebrity children made out like bandits for no reason.
I forget what Will Smith ended up paying in child support for his oldest child, but I remember telling my father how wrong I thought it was because it wasn’t her out there working for the money he made.
He said something like “Yeah, that’s true. Still, if the boy goes to Dad’s house and he’s got a mansion and a pool and all the toys he wants and then he has to go home to Mom’s little condo where he just has to live like a “normal” boy, who do you think will have the advantage over him?”
I had to admit that he was right and I’d never thought of it that way before. Hey, when I was a kid I liked having stuff. What kid wouldn’t? Why should the child live like a prince at one house and then go home to much, much less.
Of course when parents divorce (or are never married) you can’t make everything just like how it would be if the parents lived together happily. To me, child support is established to let the child live at least FINANCIALLY how he or she would if the parents were still pooling their money together as a family.
