Melanie Safka

Many moons ago, my parents had an 8-track of Gather Me by Melanie Safka (yes, I am that old :frowning: ). I loved that cassette and listened to it constantly. I learned all the songs and they stick to me to this day.
The years passed and one day, in this little pawnshop/head shop in a military town I found an LP of Gather Me. It’s 1986, everyone in my barracks was blasting hair bands, hip-hop and heavy metal. I’m listening to Brand New Key (ok, I wore headphones so I wouldn’t get the crap kicked out of me).
When I got out of the Army, I brought that album home with me. Imagine my horror when I found that the record had not survived the move. I was crushed. Actually, so was the album.
Twenty years later, I can still hear the songs in my head. I searched allover for a CD of it (I no longer have a turntable and have no intentions of buying one for just one album). “I been lookin’ all around, looked everywhere… It isn’t here, it isn’t there, nor anywhere.”
So please, you enlightened people. Can anyone point me to a place where I can find either a CD of Gather Me or a site where I can purchase the songs (iTunes and Yahoo Music don’t have them). I want my daughter to enjoy them the way I have. Thanks.

It was released on CD at one time, but has been out of print for years. I only have it on (water-stained, used) vinyl myself. I think about the only place to find it these days would be eBay (and there are no copies there currently).

“Steppin’” makes me wish I were the guy she’s going out steppin’ with.

Did you try her website?

I got a brand new pair of roller skates…

I looked but it wasn’t listed. Damn. I used to sing Baby Day to my daughter when she was an infant and would love her to hear it the way it’s supposed to be (it’s just not as moving when song by a baritone).

Actually the tracks do seem to be available on Yahoo – check it out here.

I have Gather Me, Stoneground Words, and a handful of tracks from other albums.

MP3’d 'em from the vinyl.

Wonder what ever became of her?
