Melbin Cup

It is a bloody horse race - BFW*.

Why do people get so caught up in this lame, manufactured spectacle? I am sick of all the bloody media being filled up with horses for the last couple of weeks - what a waste of effort, print, paper, time, electrons, …

It is incredible that some intensive media coverage can get people so worked up about horses running around in a circle carrying tiny men.

Bring on the crab racing - now that’s sport.

Welcome to Australia, perhaps your children or grandchildren will explain if they ever assimilate into our multi-cultural society.

It’s an excuse to dress nicely and get loaded on cheap champagne during the workday. Works for me.

Well, not any more since I no longer live in Australia, but it was fun! Anything that breaks up the monotony of the work week is good, in my opinion. It’s something that provides a bit of a lift of spirits for the general population. Sure, bread, circuses, but frankly a bit of frivolity does not go amiss in this dreary old world. You know it’s not really about the men riding in circles.

“Melbin” Cup? :dubious:

It’s a little town just outwise of Bawst’n.

Moving this to, um, hmm. Cafe Society? Does horse racing count as entertainment?

Off to MPSIMS.

Judging by the lack of traffic on the roads and people on the bus this morning (Tuesday), it appears that half of Sydney must have treated itself to a day off for the Cup.

I’ve thrown my $2 into the office sweep and drawn some nag called Xcellent. I won’t hold my breath for a prize.

I don’t see the problem, my boss has supplied a lunch and some champagne and we’ve all got the afternoon to drink, eat and watch the races. Whats so bad about that?

Bloody cheek. Entertainment and sport. Look, Giraffe, mate! (since this is an Australian-themed thread and I;‘ll have you know my aunt lives in Mt Martha), I had you a neck behind CK in my photo-finish for the Moderators’ Challenge Cup Handicap (Division 2). Now I’ve lodged an objection, and there’ll be a stewards’ enquiry. You may well find you won’t be jumping out of the stalls with the rest of the fillies and colts. Hell, if I had my way, they might even geld you.

Lightweight hope Mr. Celebrity is receiving my AUS$4 each way.

Yes, I’ve put $2 on Mr. Celebrity, just for fun. I’ve got 4 horses in a family sweep too, but I don’t know which off the top of my head.
I’ve been working on my last essay EVAR today (just finished), so I haven’t been able to get in the mood, but I’m working on it now.

My horse managed to come third, so I won $6

I’m all for national lost productivity day and the [del]champagne[/del] fizzy white wine. I admit the event is exciting on the day - I put my money on some mare called MacGyver Deve and probably won a few bob back.

Its just the incessant media coverage what irks me. Oh well, it will be all over in a couple of days and then we can get back to the natural disasters and the wars in Africa and the Middle East.

I didn’t put money on the horses.

I didn’t watch or listen to the race.

I thoroughly enjoyed wait times of up to ten minutes during the middle few hours of the day, because every other joker in the country was busy watching the race and stuffing their faces instead of breaking their computers.

I don’t like horse racing, but I do enjoy melbourne cup day.
