I think that number includes anyone who has ever registered with the SDMB. The number of paid subscriptions is only a small fraction of that.

I’ve lost track, but the last I heard there was somewhere around 4700 paid subscriptions.
The membership count includes guests, bannees, inactive dopers, etc.
