I did? Wow, I’d forgotten all about that. I think it was a whole thread on “what do you imagine other Dopers look like?” or something. It’d be cool to see it, if anyone can find it (and assuming the link still goes to the same picture.)
Well that’s some rotten news. Askia was one of the best and brightest, filled with genuine concern for others (and that trademark rapier wit). He is missed.
Jeez…where the hell does time go? I mean, I’m bad enough with names and dates, but I would have thought I’d have noticed him being gone for an entire friggin year.
Better knowing late than never knowing at all, I guess, but…jeeez.
He was—augh, “was.” :(—a hell of a character. I’ve still got a number of his comic insights archived away, for future reference and artistic inspiration.
Maybe I’ll name some malefic, cosmos-striding black supervillain after him, if I ever get the chance. I think he might have liked that.
For years I’ve been feeling sort of guilty because I had promised to send a Boston postcard to some kids he’d been working with on a school project. I never got to it, and I guess now I never will.
My condolences to his family. He was one of our bright lights, and the world is drabber for his absence.
Aw, that’s a fun post. He made a lot of those - he was great at mocking and pointing out stereotypes and examining those issues humorously. That’s such a valuable skill. Years ago I came up with a black hero who contradicts almost all of those cliches.
Stumbling on this thread from the thread in ATMB really shocked me. I’d kind of noticed he’d not posted, since he was one of the posters I’d always make a point to read, but I figured he just decided this place wasn’t worth his time anymore (for whatever reason).
What a depressing revelation. My condolences to his family.
Askia always made you punish your brain trying to think of counter-examples, too: a lot of people can take the piss, but he was so good at the kind of piss-taking that made you think. I posted a similar comment in another thread, but what the hell: Askia, this time the black guy did make it through to the end.
