I just started a new job at a large company. I will be in contact with everyone in the company since I am their ‘IT’ professional.
The dress is business casual and I have a question for you; should the socks match the pants, or the shoes?
I have heard everything from; the socks should match the pants. The socks should match the shoes. The socks should match the pants, unless wearing tan pants when they should match the shoes.
What is the definitive answer?
Thank you for your help.
P.S. I added ‘fetish’ in the title because no wants to read
“Mens sock fashion”
Tan or brown slacks go with tan or brown shoes and should have an offset color of sock that is also tan or brown (any pattern is fine as long as it does not have blue or a bright green in it).
If you wear jeans then the sock color depends more on the shoe color. As always shoues should not clash with belt or suspenders or you invite ridicule.
Black slacks can work with black or cordovan shoes but if you chose cordovan for a shoe color do not match the socks unless it is an argyle style with cordovan panels offset by cream with a bit of undertone gold piping.
For most occasions Jockey makes some great dress/casual socks in many colors and patterns that wear well and look good with most pant/shoe combinations. Also you can almost never go wrong with a Gold-Toe sock and they will alst you forever.
Plain black socks or so out of vouge that you almost never see them on well dressed casual men anymore unless that outfit calls for them specifically. There are a few solid black socks which alternate a satin and matte paneling and those can work more often than not but usually don’t display much flair or taste.
As always white socks with slacks or dress shoes is for people who either don’t care or don’t know any better.
Yellow socks are a “dont”.
Light green is another “don’t”.
Pick up a copy of “Details” magazine and look at what the ment there are wearing. You can usually match color and style w/o having to match brand names and prices. The models in Details are probably the best examples of business casual and are a good watermark for those who are uncertain or just learning.
for more specific information I would have to see the outfit.
Bachelor housekeeping checkin’ in here. Dressing up for “an occasion” is a different animal than what I think the OP is addressing. The workday world demands for socks can be successfully met with, as mattk has already noted, black socks for all occasions. They go with any combination of suit and shoe, or slacks and blazer.
If youre given toward slippery little Italian racing loafers, the combo I see most often matches the socks to the trousers; but, you can match’em to the shirt.
What a bother. Get yourself a pair of burgundy Bass Weejuns (comfy shoes) and a pair of the same in black, or hell, maybe some saddle oxfords. If you buy black socks, all of the same mark, it eases a big part of the laundry burden - no matching up, any two’ll do.
