Not going into a debate about intelligence tests or anything…I’m just curious about how many dopers are also mensa members.
So just reply yes if you are…

I used to be but quit because I couldn’t afford the subscription no more. Do I count?
That would be a yes
I was when I was in high school but found my local chapter to be (sorry guys) a a lot of boring geeks so I never pursued it again. Now that I am older (and presumably a boring geek) I might relate better but it’s not high on my agenda.
Recent thread:
Ya…I read that and don’t really want to get into how legit it is.
Just want to know how many dopers took the test and passed it.
I passed a preliminary test with flying colors but so far haven’t bothered to take the actual test. The few Mensans I’ve met weren’t exactly the kind of people I’d like to hang out with anyway.
Does that count? Half a point perhaps?
I wuz fer a whil. But after a couple of years I quite. My opinion is that Mensa should change its charter - it is a social group, often a place where singles mingle hoping to meet someone they are attracted to. Other people just go to reduce their loneliness. Not very many go to a meeting in order to have deep thoughts. When Mensa changes its prime mission to that of a social group, then I might consider rejoining.
I joined as a youngster and dropped out due to boredom. I just did it to see if I could…
I am, but have only attended two meetings.
I don’t know, the people were nice, but I’m the youngest person there by far, and the meetings are 40 miles away.
I passed by virtue of several standarized test scores that they accept. I imagine hundreds of Dopers also meet those criteria. I have never joined.
Tested in at 16. Quit after two years because I found the whole idea and the few people that I met to be insufferable.
This probably should have been posted in IMHO.

I’m a member, but have only attended one function so far (Mensa Mind Games in Atlanta).
I am a very inactive member. Hardly even read the magazines.
Yep, I’ve taken the test… thought I bombed it but it turned out that I did pass… and been to a couple of Mensa things.
Badandi’s remark about is interesting… everybody taking the test was my age (late 20s). But everybody at the Mensa functions I’ve been to is at least 50. Maybe the test makes people age quickly.
I think they must have raised their standards in the meantime. I think you need a 120 or 130 these days…
I’m going to take the Mensa test in May. We’ll see.
This is a sort of survey, so I’ll move this thread to IMHO.

Was a member back in my early Georgetown days and really didn’t get a whole hell of a lot out of it. Quite frankly, I’m among those who get a lot more emotionally and intellectually out of the Straight Dope. Even though I’m weird and most probably insufferable, i.e. perfect Mensa material.
I am in Mensa. Got in about 3 years ago. I edited the 28 page LA area newsletter for almost a year. Then I got sick of the boring geeks combined with nasty, mentally ill 80-something year olds with nothing better to do than complain. Most members are poor, old and very hard to get along with.
Still, I would join if you can get in. I made a couple of really good friends, and the national magazine is somewhat interesting to read. The Young M’s group in LA is mostly 20 and 30 somethings that are relatively nice people.
