Mercedes Benz model names

Has Mercedes Benz ever sold a car with an actual name (like Ford Escort, Dodge Viper, etc) as opposed to a combination of letters & numbers?

I know they have classes of vehicles and some cars have the word Kompressor tacked on, but I wouldn’t count those.

Wikipedia says no from the 60s onwards (I guess the G-Wagen doesn’t count?) Other marques owned by Mercedes have names though.

Kompressor refers to supercharged models.

A few years ago, I parked a bare-bones Gelandenwagen…before Mercedes gussied it up into the Luxury SUV G-500 Class

“Geländewagen” is a generic term. For instance, you can find many references to the VW “Geländewagen”. Here’s an interesting experiment - the German wikipedia article on “Geländewagen”:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geländewagen

(Note the list of “Typische Geländewagen” at the end of the article.)

The interesting bit is the English translation - note what “Geländewagen” becomes:

(“Typical Jeeps”. I wonder what Daimler Chrysler would have to say about that …)

Not to mention that “Hummer” appears to be German for “Lobster” - I got a giggle out of that, too.

This may be a stretch, but I’d say yes with Unimog-that name being an acronym.

I’ve seen the Sprinter Van with the M-B logo.

Good one. I didn’t know they were importing those into the US.

I saw the Sprinter and Unimog on the Wikipedia site but didn’t think they counted, the OP wanted cars with names.

Reminds me too of how many European manufacturers use model numbers and not names in their ranges.

The Blitzen Benz would qualify if it had gone into serial production.

I can’t remember the name of it right now, but what about that super-expensive, luxury car by Mercedes-Benz? It had a glass ceiling etc. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? I swear it had a name.

That’d be the Maybach. It’s a subsidiary brand of MB. It has two models: The 57 and the 62.

The glass-ceiling is an option even on C-Class. Really cool feature BTW.

In pre-Maybach days, that would have been the 600 limousine.

2005 Mercedes Maclaren SLR

Almost.

It’s the SLR MacLaren.

Almost.

The car is named the SLR. It was produced by a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Cars.

I don’t know why the Mercedes website calls it the “SLR McLaren”. The McLaren website refers to it simply as the “Mercedes SLR”.

I’ve always seen it referred to as the “Mercedes-McLaren SLR”, which seems the most accurate. In any case, the name is solely “SLR”.

Looking at the main MB site under the models section, the model is referred to as the SLR McLaren. There’s an SL-class, but the SLR is not a part of it.

If you Google “Mercedes Benz SLR”, nearly all the sites found will tack on the McLaren name.

I checked the Kelly Blue Book site and it lists the car the same way.

Odd.

However, SLR was used by Benz in the mid 50’s for the 300 SLR aka Gullwing roadster.

I suppose it might be the official name, but as mentioned McLaren Cars does not refer to it that way itself.

The international Mercedes website is inconsistent. In most places it calls it simply “The SLR” or “The SLR Class”, but occasionally does mention “The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren”. See here.

It seems to me that they use McLaren’s name much like they use Kompressor. Before their partnership broke up, there were rumors that they would produce another car together. I’d imagine they would’ve call it the ___ McLaren too.
