I’m having a 1966 MGB roadster restored. One good thing about restoring British cars is that there is the British Motor Heritage Trust, which continues to make OEM parts; and Moss Motors (and others) are sort of a “one-stop shopping” mart for them. Of course, there weren’t all that many models of British cars. (e.g., Although there were many, many changed in MGBs over their 18-year production run, they basically came in two flavours – pre-1968 and post-1968.)
An acquaintance of mine recently bought a 1967 Mercedes Benz 220 Diesel. I generally don’t like Mercedes, but the older ones (say, pre-1977) are cool. His floorboards are rotten, and at ligh speed a passenger may find his leg ground to a bloody stump if he isn’t careful. I see “bubbly” rust on the lower door panels and fenders. It’s going to take a lot of work to put it into good condition. (He likes the car a lot, but I don’t know if he likes it enough to restore it.)
Is there a resource in the U.S. similar to Moss Motors, where a person can get virtually any Mercedes restoration part? If there is, I’d like to pass the information to him.
Personally, I don’t know much about Mercedes restoration parts. But the dealer might be able to help him. I know that Porsche has kept many older parts in production, and they’ve recently started re-stamping some sheetmetal parts specifically for restoration. There’s a chance that Mercedes does the same. If not, the dealer might still be able to direct your friend to a reliable source. Also have a look at Hemmings Motor News.
I know that’s not a one-stop-shop answer, unfortunately.
Thanks, manniac. I didn’t find any sheet metal for this car.
Johnnny, you know, I would have thought that say, a 2.8 litre “Pagoda” coupe from the period would have been worth restoring, but wow? A Diesel? Oh well, no accounting for car freaks being car freaks.
Keep us posted on this one. I’m always interested in hearing how restorations work out. Some people try to do 'em on the cheap - others do 'em properly.
I’m sorry however that I don’t have any advice regarding websites or anything. Well not on Mercs. Mustangs? I can help you there. But you know, as a wise garage mechanic told me once - anything can be fixed - absolutely anything. It’s just a question of money.
I’m sure you already know that of course.
