I can’t really think of anything bad enough to call this woman. I thought she might be mentally ill at first; there is a condition called Munchausen’s Syndrome by Proxy in which caretakers (usually parents or nurses) actually fake illness in their charges to get more attention for themselves, sometimes going so far as to actually injure their charges. But then the ‘fund-rasing’ seems to negate this possibility. Genuinely mentally ill people with this condition generally don’t care about the money, they want the sympathy fix.
But she still seems to have gone a little far with it- I’m sure there are plenty of other ways to make a quick buck which don’t involve damaging your child’s psyche. And it’s this which has really made me so angry, and makes me feel that what this woman did is evil and inexcusable. Stealing and lying are bad enough, but they’re not so incomprehensibly vile. She willfully told her own child that she was dying, and even put her into therapy to deal with it! Can you imagine what this is like for a seven-year-old? Not to mention her complete disrespect for and mockery of the thousands of children who really are dying from cancer, and who really have to prepare for their own death.
I can’t even wrap my mind around why somenoe would do such a thing if they’re not mentally ill. This sounds horrible, I know, but I’m hoping this woman does have genuine mental problems which caused her to do this. It may make it just a little bit easier for her daughter to understand. Not that it excuses anything, and I’m sure this poor kid will have lasting problems because of this no matter what. But I think it might be easier for her to hear “Mommy did this because she was sick” than “Mommy did this because she’s an evil bitch.”
There are some kids that starving Ethopians could provide a better upbringing for.
Ratty, my thoughts exactly. I would think she’d HAVE to be nuts to do this (I hope). If she is truly this cruel, there are just no words for how fucked up this is. The poor kid. I could cry thinking about what this little girl is going through.

On preview, I saw ratty’s post about Munchausen’s. I also cannot concieve of someone being able to do this without a serious mental illness. Maybe the fund-raising was to enable the mom to “cast a wider net” for sympathy, as well as to manipulate others into giving her money?
