Everywhere I turn in Montreal this summer, I see these mesh slippers. They’re replacing flip-flops as casual summer footwear.
I wasn’t going to buy into the trend. I considered them worse than flip-flops, because at least flip-flops don’t look like they belong with pj’s and a housecoat. My co-workers at the clinic are wearing them at work, and although they technically meet the “no toes exposed” clinic dress code, I thought they were tacky.
Then I tried on a friend’s pair.
Today I bought two pairs of my own. They’re ridiculously comfortable. And the look is growing on me, now that they’re on my feet.
Have mesh slippers taken over where you live? Do you think they’re cute and comfy, or are they annoying shuffly slipper things that have no place at work?
OMG, yes! Those things are everywhere. They look terribly uncomfortable, although I’ve never actually held a pair, so this isn’t an educated opinion. Also, I don’t like me feet showing through my shoes. I don’t mind sandals, but if there’s fabric, it shouldn’t be see-through in any way. I know. I’m strange. I accept that.
Personally, I would never wear them outside of the house. And I can’t imagine ever thinking they are appropriate for work.
I see them all over now, too. I have a feeling they were invented to give some women the option to wear something out shopping besides their fuzzy bedroom slippers. Gawd, I hope that isn’t popular where you live. It grosses me out!
Yes, they have hit Cleveland, and in more styles than those (my boss bought some of THOSE way back last fall!) I don’t think I’ll be buying any, though, because unless I wear them with hose, the stupid nail on my pinkie toe will keep snagging on the mesh and cause pain. I have this really weird nail that kind of splits down the center, and there is always a little snaggy edge that sticks out. Another trend I’ll have to miss.
Terribly popular in NYC and at my North Jersey high school. No offense to fans, but I happen to think they’re hideous. In fact, I banned them from my house
Normally I think they look silly, but those on the site look kind of cute. I don’t think I’d wear them though 'cause I’m short. I like my heeled footwear, thanks.
I love them. I’m all about footwear you can get for $5. Plus, I adore any shoes with sequins. I even have a dressy pair by Nina with little kitten heels that I wear to work…
They’re everywhere in Central Jersey, especially in white.
I hate 'em. I don’t mind the looks of them so much, but I really dislike the way they make people shuffle around. I see all these cute young women shuffling down the street looking like little old men from the nursing home.
Looking at those, I can’t believe they haven’t hit Detroit yet. It is only a matter of time, I’m sure, as ugly clothing trends (especially if they are cheap) seem to prosper here like kudzu in Alabama. The latest one here is the ugly see-through ponchos, which now that I think about it, will create an ensemble that will be enhanced by ugly see-through shoes. I can just imagine the shoe flapping and dragging these shoes produce.
That’s what I hate. It’s one more shoe that makes girls scuff their feet when they walk. PICK UP YOUR FEET! (Oh, Lordy, I am turning into my mother with each passing day. Someone shoot me now… )
I needed a pair of shoes for the pool, and I hate regular flip-flops with that thing between my toes, and just wanted some cheapy flip-flops that slide on. I found some at K-Mart, and they had tons of those mesh shoes in the same aisle, in every color. I thought they were awful. No offense, tremorviolet.
Oh holy hell, people. The reason we wear shoes is to protect our feet and keep us from falling down when we step on something pointy or slippery. Flip-flops and slippers are NOT SHOES! Some gal at the grocery store was wearing flip-flops and fell on her ass. Put some shoes on, y’all!
(I can’t believe I haven’t seen the slippers yet here in CA. It’s ALLLLL about the flip-flops.)
None taken. Personally, the only reason I wear shoes is to keep the ground from burning my feet. I like the least amount of shoes possible and mesh slippers (and flip-flops which I can buy for $3.50 and make last alllll summer) totally fit the bill. And in the winter? I’m usually in some sort of slip-in clog variant
Not a pair around here, which doesn’t surprise me since Louisville is usually at least a year behind fashion-wise. But we do love our tacky stuff, so I bet there will be plenty on our streets next summer.
Personally, I need shoes that stay on my feet. For casual wear, I’m practically living in these. And they’re top-rack dishwasher safe.
