Methotrexate & Rheumatoid Arthtitis - Experiences/Opinoins, please

My mother has suffered from fairly severe rheumatoid arthritis for several years. She did not respond well to several different treatments, and she was until recently having weekly IVs of Methotrexate.
She has become very distressed to recently, after several months, learn that this was a form of chemotherapy, and has ceased this treatment.
She has asked me to get some info from the 'net about methotrexate so she has some ‘ammunition’ when she goes in to discuss this decision with her doctor later this week.

I have pulled a load of info off from various web-sites, what I would really appreciate very much would be if any dopers out there with first or second hand experience of any kind with this drug would share it with me.

Links to useful web-sites, official or unofficial would also be appreciated - I have no medical knowledge and have just printed reams off from my Google searches. I don’t mind hearing about the same web-site zillions of times, I do mind missing something obvious.

Any and all advice or comments also gratefully received.

Thanks.

a close friend of mine went through this treatment and it helped her significantly.

IIRC (no guarentee), she had to have her blood drawn on a really regular basis during the treatment. And that was a bigger pain to her than the treatment itself. (advice on that, make good friends with a good blood tech and learn their schedule).

Well, methotrexate is a rough drug, but gods above, RA is a nasty disease. I’ve had patients benefit from methotrexate tremendously, and it preserved function, and reduced pain for a long time. Other’s didn’t tolerate it well. We still don’t have a magic bullet for RA, nor are we likely to soon. I’d suggest going to webmd.com for reliable info, or this site: http://www.help4rheumatoid.com

And ignore all those other internet sites that offer to cure RA with a simple and easy treatment you buy from them!

Good luck!
