A freight train and Metrolink train no. 111 (to Moorpark) collided this afternoon. There are conflicting reports as to what has happened, and a lot of people are predicting the collision to be worse than the 2005 crash. Right now I’m seeing reports of 2-3 dead but hearing much worse. Hoping area Dopers and their families are safe and sound.
Eek. I take this route every day, though not as far as Chatsworth, and in the afternoons I often ride this very same machine after it turns around at Moorpark and goes back south. Today I caught the 2:59 southbound instead, thank goodness.
Just last week, on this same route, a man was hit and killed on the tracks, and of course the line was also involved in the 2005 crash. Out of respect for the dead, I won’t suggest a curse, but I will suggest that laying some more track and investing in the rail infrastructure would be a good way to start solving the problems. Having freight trains and passenger trains share a single track in such a populated, traffic-clogged area seems to be asking for disaster.
Latest fatality estimate is at least twenty. Looking at that locomotive shoehorned into the passenger car doesn’t give much cause for hope.
And did I hear one of the reporters use the word “efforting”?
Yikes, Dr. Drake. I’m glad you weren’t on that train at the time.
movingfinger, which channel is giving a report of 20? Last I heard it was up to 10.
I work right there by where it happened. I started a thread a little while ago about my experiences today.
I was listening to the KNBC 11 PM news, and they were reporting 20 at this point.
