Mets Pitcher R.A. Dickey Wins National League Cy Young Award

Very well deserved and a very classy guy.

I had been hoping, but with the Mets, it’s never good to be too optimistic. This has been a fantastic year for Dickey; the only thing that overshadowed his pitching was Johann Santana’s no-hitter. And Dickey had two one-hitters in a row.

He’s also a class act and deserves recognition for all the hard work he put in to turn it around.

Of course, now they’re planning to trade him. :frowning:

There isn’t a Mets fan alive who doesn’t absolutely love R.A. Dickey … and I am a Mets fan.

I don’t know if Dickey was literally the best pitcher in the NL this year, but he may have been, and he certainly was at least close enough to be a reasonable choice, so that pleases me. I don’t think the voting should have been so lopsided, but that’s just the way these things go.

I’d hate to see the team trade him, but then I really hated the idea of trading Jose Reyes, and of course that plan didn’t work out so great. Yeah, I don’t know.

But still, let’s not lose sight: awesome news!

Dickey is a perfectly fine choice, though I’d have voted for Johnny Cueto, and am surprised he fared so poorly in the voting (not even top 3?).

Did Aroldis Chapman crack the top 3?

Chapman got 1 5th place vote, tying him for 8th. I also would have voted for Cueto and I’m also very surprised he was only 4th in voting. Dickey is a fine choice, but I’m surprised how much of a landslide the voting was. Dickey got 27 of the 32 1st place votes.

Also… I’m certainly not angry or outraged by David Price winning in the AL, as he had a great year… but not only was Verlander better, I’d ASSUMED he was a lock.

What happened? Evidently, 20 wins is STILL a magical number in many voters’ minds.

I could only hate the Mets more if the Yankees never existed. But I still think this guy is a great pitcher and deserved the award.

A good guy and a good day for the literary world.

Price also had a lower ERA even though Verlander’s other stats were better. It was the closest Cy Young vote in 30+ years: Price got 14 first-place votes and Verlander got 13. The other first-place vote went to Fernando Rodney. Yeah.
