Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, one of the world’s most sought-after drug lords, has been captured, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Friday…

He was captured again Friday in a firefight between his bodyguards and Mexican Marine special forces in the Sinaloa city of Los Mochis, on the Pacific coast and not far from his home, government officials said. Five of his associates were killed, six injured and several captured, the navy said. One marine was wounded.

The Mexican government on Thursday extradited its most notorious drug kingpin, the often elusive Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, to the United States to face a raft of federal charges related to the trafficking of tons of narcotics over more than two decades.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry announced the transfer, saying it culminated a lengthy court battle by Guzmán’s lawyers for him to remain in Mexico, where he had repeatedly managed to escape from prison and had lived like a king most of the time that he was behind bars.

A Mexican official told The Washington Post that the Thursday evening transfer, on the last full day of the Obama administration, was meant as a “farewell gift” to Obama and not as an overture to President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office Friday.
