If I misunderstood the meaning of the original cite I posted, it’s due to bad wording in the article. I asked for clarification, then basically was told by some that I knew what the article meant the whole time.
If Salon.com is saying that Moore’s tape is of an interview that was done, fine and dandy. I’m okay with that, and I apologize for a misleading OP.
However, it hardly excuses Moore for using it as a tool to sell tickets, and then turn around and say he wants to keep it “private.”
Which is what I thought the convo had moved on to. If not, and it’s easier to continue bashing me, have a party. But I notice nobody’s stepping up to offer an explanation of said move, other than cmason32, who I suspect is right in his thinking.
I for one had no problem with this, I had the same misreading at first.
Do you have a reading comprehension problem? Moore was keeping it private. Someone not affiliated with him or his movie leaked it to the press. When asked by the press who already had the story, he responded with a minimal statement. Had he not responded or lied about having it, you’d have no doubt found fault with that too.
Look I’m not a Michael Moore fan, I thought BfC was an insipid piece of shit of a film. My objection is the “he must have had a profit/publicity motive” leap given that you admitted that you didn’t know his motivation. The “I’ll leave it to others” is a bullshit dishonest tactic.
Well, in case no one else comments on this: thanks for apologizing for the misleading OP. There does seem to be a lot of knee-jerking on the SDMB lately (maybe it was a hectic week).
That being said… I think the comments of “oh he’s just doing it to plug his upcoming movie” are completely outlandish and childish, IMHO.
My first guess would be: because the media, generally speaking, is really good at digging up information on things (esepcially things like this).
Now, if Moore had gone directly to CNN, and said something along the lines of “Hey everyone! I have this exclusive interview with Nick Berg, before his beheading! But, I’m not gonna show it to anyone, until I talk with his family first!” then I would agree that he did something wrong and completely distasteful. As it stand right now (that is, with the information provided thus far) I don’t see this as the case.
Hmmm…okay, maybe I wasn’t clear enough. I really had no problem with the “misleading” OP (I read it more as misunderstanding an unclear article and I misunderstood it too).
But that doesn’t appear to be what he was doing.
sigh Once again, he didn’t dangle it out there. He was contacted about it after it was leaked and made a minimal comment confirming its existence but refusing to divulge any details.
And you accuse me of having a reading disability? For the last time, I’ve got no horse in this race. I found it interesting, thought the thread was best-suited for The Pit, and created it. End of story.
BTW, you seem hell-bent on painting me a Moore-basher. Can I ask you what I’ve said (aside from suspecting it’s a publicity ploy, and calling him politically-motivated) led you to this decision? I’m honestly curious why all the vitriolic crap seems to be spewing from you.
“Leap?” Why wouldn’t I (and others) suspect that? It’s not entirely unlike him.
I’d respond to this, but I honestly have no damned idea what you meant by that. Dishonest tactic?
Let’s see (all quotes Chastain86):
“The question is, how will Moore attempt to use this for political and personal gain?”
Well, it doesn’t appear that he has so far.
“Which begs the question, if he was interested in “dealing strictly with the parents,” why did news of this ended up splashed all over the papers?”
It got “splashed” by someone else. He confirmed that he had it, but refused to reveal any details out of respect for the family.
“but to try and pretend that this move is anything but a calculated plan to keep his name in the press is profoundly obtuse.”
Calculated by who? Based on the later information, who was being obtuse?
Sorry for the lack of clarity. You said “I’ll leave it to others to draw the conclusions” after making it pretty damn clear what your conclusion was. That’s the dishonesty. You put as much spin as possible on as few facts as possible and then " it to others to draw the conclusions."
All the vitrolic crap? I made one post aimed at you and the first part of it was an expression of understanding concerning the original confusion about the film being part of the execution video. It got me too.
Jesus fucking Christ, Chastain, do have po rtions of this thread blocked out on your computer or something. You were fucking WTRONG, asshole. What part of “Michael Moore is NOT the one who leaked this” do you not understand? Maybe you don’t know what “unaffiliated with MM or F911” means.?
There isn’t a single reason to bash MM for any of this and there is no question being “begged” by it (btw, you misused the phrase “beg the question.” Look it up. Don’t use phrases if you don’t know what they mean).
It was an interview which was filmed before the kidnapping.
Someone else - not Moore, and not anyone connected to Moore- leaked the item to Saddam. All MM did was confirm that he had the tape.
At what point has Moore acted like an ass or used the tape for self-promotion?
Christ, people. He was interviewed for the film. Moore didn’t include any of the interview in his film, for whatever reason. (he didn’t say the right things, he didn’t say them coherently, what he said was said better by others, the film was just running long…) That happens a lot. The decision not to use Berg’s interview was made long before the decapitation.
He’s not “airing the video” because the film was already completed.
Your mistake didn’t bother me, at least not the mistake about the source and nature of the video. What bugged me were your continued insinuations about Moore’s motives with regards to the story after repeated corrections which explained to you that Moore had nothing to do with the existence of the tape being released to the press.
As of this post you still haven’t acknowledged that you have no basis to make those insinuations.
See, that’s the nice thing about a simple, general dislike of someone- everything they do, like breathing, is a vague insult.
On that note, lemme edit that statement some to reflect another general feeling of mine:
“I don’t like Diogenes the Cynic and everything he does reinforces my belief that he is an ass.”
