I’m like Blackberry. This woman doesn’t strike me as a real person, and thus I can’t scrap up any sympathy.
Few people on this planet have given birth to as many kids as this couple has. And those that do usually do so because of high infant mortality rates. The Duggars do not have high infant mortality rates to compensate for. They are attention whores who are exploiting their children.
Should she die because she’s made being pregnant a way of life, that would be incredibly irresponsible. Just because they have a right to have has many kids as they do doesn’t make exerting this right “righteous”.
I feel for her. Going through a miscarriage is terrible, no matter how many children you have. And being in her second trimester, too. It’s not just a little clump of cells at that point, and it’s a pretty major trauma to suffer through.
I highly doubt the Duggars read the SDMB, but I still wouldn’t feel good about making fun of someone’s very personal tragedy.
I’m glad she’s okay, and I hope this doesn’t inspire her to try again soon. Just call it a day at 19, guys. God will understand.
I’m pretty surprised at all the people who seem to think there’s a possibility they’ll start trying to prevent pregnancies now. “Leaving it in God’s hands” is their philosophy of life, their livelihood, and the thing that they get to feel superior to everyone else about. They’re not going to do a complete 180 just because of a miscarriage. Especially not when they’re so close to #20, such a nice round number.
Well, it’s not so much that I think they’ll try to prevent pregnancy at this point, but I fear for her health if they should be so devastated by the miscarriage that they start tinkering with nature and pursuing the more drastic fertility treatments that might be indicated for a 46 year old woman who wants “just one more baby”…
It’s a great way to get cancer - ask Elizabeth Edwards.
Well, I think that if they’re leaving it “in God’s hands” to prevent pregnancies (or not), they’d also leave it “in God’s hands” if she didn’t get pregnant again. I do think they have that much sense.
I don’t think they believe in using fertility treatment, so no, I don’t think they’ll do that either. But I bet they’re hoping and expecting that she’ll get pregnant again. And she likely will.
Except now she’s had two bad pregnancy outcomes in a row. A premature birth, and a fetal death. At her age, with her number of pregnancies…any competent medical authority she has contact with has got to be telling her that getting pregnant again is a bad idea. Aside from the whole pile 'o babies thing, they’ve always struck me as reasonably sane…perhaps they’ll listen when the doctors say it’s a bad idea.
If you just trust God until you think God might make a bad decision, that’s not really trusting God at all.
And if you think they’re kind of sane, you just haven’t been paying that much attention. Well, and TLC intentionally doesn’t air some of the more controversial things, of course, so it is hard to tell unless you do a little research. But if you google Bill Gothard, the guy whose homeschooling philosophy and programs they follow, you’ll see that they’re truly nuts.
Like Lynn, I’m going to call “bullshit” on this one. Many women had 18+ children? No. Not in the recent past. Not ever.
They’re not puppies - they don’t shoot out 10 or 12 at a time! The reason humans can’t have 18+ normally is because it takes almost a year to make just one. 18+ kids is just near-impossible to do.
I’m sure they have, and the Duggar’s have flatly ignored them.
Most rational people would have wised up 15 kids ago. Since they passed that point a long time ago, with a premature baby thrown on top, I see no reason to think this miscarriage is going to be their a-ha moment. Menopause is the only thing that is gonna put a halt to the Duggar parade.
It just bothers me completely. I don’t often participate in the Duggar threads because it disgusts me and yet, I don’t want to curtail anyone’s reproductive rights. But really, what does anyone know about Mrs. Duggar except that she’s a mother of 19? She’s got no identity other than that. And what kind of example is that setting for her daughters? I’m not saying a mother is a bad identity but that means you are always identifying yourself in terms of your relationship to someone else, and never on your own merits. I don’t think that’s a great thing. Adult women should be women first, and then whatever else they want to be on top of that.
Men don’t have this problem. Men are men first, and then they are CEOs or fathers or whatever it might be.
I’d wish she’d think her God was telling her to stop, but I don’t think she will.
That would have:
a) been incredibly traumatic for 19 undeserving kids, and
b) given her husband the green light to marry another young woman and start spittin’ out kiddos 20 thru 38.

I know they’re Young Earth Creationists and patriarchal, and I’d be highly surprised if they didn’t tow the Fundie line on gay rights and probably Obama being evil. Is it even freakier than that?
ETA: Went to his wiki. Some choice excerpts:
I’ll bet that show has some damned interesting deleted scenes. They sound like monogamist polygamists almost.
With 19 kids, really good odds that at least 1 will be gay and at least 1 will go totally slutty and or do drugs when out of the house. I’m curious how they’ll deal with that.
Hell, with 19 total kids and 9 already into the teenage years (or past them), the odds are good that one of their kids has already figured out they’re gay or tried drugs or mounted a repressed Christian sex-a-thon.
If they have other children and/or trying again could kill them, then yes, I would.
If by “many” you mean “most” or even “a significant portion” I’m going to need a cite, because you are wrong here.
Also, for the record, while 18+ may not be historically common, large families certainly were. So was maternal death during pregnancy and labor, and infant and child death. It was a different time, and not a better one. Some of us aren’t all gung-ho to bring it back.
Firstly, not many people are making fun, and secondly, where should we make fun? I doubt sincerely she reads the SDMB, it’s in the right forum… what’s the problem?
I was raised with gothard (seminars, we were in his home schooling program, etc) and he is nuts. The very conservative, right wing, non-denominational church we went to thought he was out there.
