Michelle Obama was my hero today

Think about it. It’s not really that hard.

How do we know her head was uncovered? Maybe she went there with her International Diplomacy hair on. She rich. She can have hair for any occasion.

(singing) Put on your high-heel sneakers; wear your wig hat on your head.

US dependence on foreign oil isn’t like US dependence on say, Taiwanese semiconductors. The US actually consumes a lot more oil than is necessary for economic development, mainly because Americans drive so much more than other peoples. When two people go down the street to the convenience store to get beer, and they both take their own cars, and freak out when gas goes up 25 cents, that’s very similar to addictive behavior. And our politics tends to respond to that by prioritizing cheap oil over all other considerations, whether they be human rights or the environment.

Sure, I can imagine there are no countries,
It isn’t hard to do.
Nothing to live or die for
No religion, too.

But that doesn’t feed all the others who believe in countries, religions, and are willing to live and die for them.

Without the petroleum produced by SA (as well as other countries like the USA, who want to cash in on the market), we could not feed the 8 million or so folks who are fighting for a equal share.

It’s remarkable that liberals who often criticize conservatives for lacking cultural sensitivity are now praising Michelle Obama for flouting local cultural customs.

Said with no irony whatsoever, huh? Would it be okay for me to say “Fuck the Jews?” (I could argue all of those things about Israel and at least some forms of Judaism–especially the head covering thing.) And it doesn’t seem to be rhetorical, as your subsequent comments double down on it. You even pull out fucking 9/11 about it!

Look, if you are denigrating an entire group of people based on race, religion, country of origin, gender, sexuality, etc, you are participating in bigotry. It doesn’t become okay because they are “the bad guys.”

There are arguably valid reasons to not wear the hijab, but “Fuck the Saudis” is not one of them. It’s not as if only the Saudi government has the more (note the spelling) against uncovered women. Heck, it’s not even a Saudi thing. It’s a Middle East thing.

And I know I’ll be blasted for this, because that’s the way this board works now. But I’m not going to sit back and watch the hatred spewing from you and act like that’s okay. You don’t get to preach about tolerance of women while yourself being intolerant towards Saudis. You don’t get to use the 9/11 argument used by people to hate Muslims.

Quote liberals from this website criticizing conservatives for lacking “cultural sensitivity.”

Yes, as a liberal myself, it does fucking piss me off. This isn’t a matter of not believing everything in liberalism. This is a tenet that is espoused on this very board.

Yes, I get that she’s not really flouting customs, as it’s not like she’s the first to do this. But a lot of you though she was, and were congratulating her on it.

It is the type of thing that makes me think politics is just a game for a lot of people.

I never thought she was the first; I support anyone anywhere pointing out the Saudi’s abhorrent treatment of women, or refusing to conform to it. It’s been my policy since before joining this site.

I get the feeling some people expect liberals to behave a certain way and cry hypocrisy when they don’t, without thinking about it too deeply.

Morays? Most conspiracy theories say that prominent world figures are reptiles, not fish. Morays?

Slithery snakelike fishy predators that hide in crevices with their head protruding, ready to viciously bite opportunistically at anything they can get away with.

Yeah, sounds like most politicians to me.

Why is the news making such a big thing about this when several republican women also did it before her?

Oh yeah. Democrats in the media.

Our Dutch queen Beatrix wore a scarf two years ago, but that was during the visit a newly finished mosque complex. Don’t know if she wore one wnen visiting secular sites there. Elsevier | An Information Analytics Business

Here she is during a visit to Brunei, sans hijab, while the other ladies wear one. I suppose it’s a case by case thing. DPG Media Privacy Gate

Good for her.

I’d be cautious trying to infer someone’s mood from a candid still photograph, they can be shockingly misleading.

Wrong. The First Lady is a very symbolic part of the Presidential office, and what the First Lady advocates and says is watched very closely by the press, and reflects upon the White House, should she choose to take that role. And, I think the country is better off for her doing so.

You can’t just disqualify an important ally because you disagree with some of their political and social policies. What you CAN do however is use your leverage as their ally to send important statements about how you’d prefer to see them conduct themselves. By your logic, the White House should agree with how Israel handles Palestinians, 100% of the time, and shouldn’t pressure Israel when it feels it went too far.

When put in a position of power to be able to make a stand where you can’t be punished for doing so, morally, sometimes you have a duty and obligation to do so on behalf of those who cannot because they are oppressed.

I don’t recall that ever happening when a Saudi official visited the White House, so you are making up some sort of exaggerated example that never happened to back up your argument.

Do you prefer Iran over Saudi Arabia? Iran makes their women wear scarves, as well.

I didn’t say all the time.

Politics is usually toxic enough that I feel the need to highlight areas of agreement, few that there may be.

Religion is not like any of those other things you said. Religion is a collection of thoughts and actions, and we are right to judge people by the things they think and do. If you think that women should be forbidden basic freedoms because they are not men you are a shitty person who deserves to be recognised as such, and hiding behind “God says” doesn’t change that.

An entire group of people could be the KKK.

An entire group of people could be an alien UFO suicide cult.

I retain the right to “denigrate” an entire group of people who are demonstrably harmful or oppressive to *another *entire group of people.

This is like the whole we’re hypocrites for discriminating against homophobes argument.

You are allowed to pick on bigots for being bigots. When they stop being bigots, then it will become something that shouldn’t be done.
