Michigan Dopers, what do you think of these two places?

Taco Boy and Uccello’s. I spent a good many hours between their locations installing point of sale registers and networks. I ate at both a few times and am interested in opinions from locals.

The following are all IMHO:

Taco boy (on Plainfield in Grand Rapids) seemed like it used to be gyro place maybe. The staff was nice as could be, and they cooked their taco meat on a huge cooking surface with lots of spices added and plenty of TLC. I tried one of their famous burritos and it tasted (to me) like a burrito I might have made at home, or might have had at a generic cafeteria.

Some people LOVE Chipotle burritos. I like them quite a bit and I don’t think they can be fairly compared to Taco Boy’s ground beef burritos. They’re very different. Some people really like Taco Bell burritos, and I’d have to say I actually prefer them to the Taco Boy burritos.

Their burritos didn’t taste bad at all, but seemed as pedestrian as I could imagine, yet, the line was out the door all the damn time. Please explain MI.

Uccello’s: One of their pizzas was called “The Faro” after Faro Uccello, the namesake and overseer of the chain. I chose an image of Marlon Brando as Don Corleone just because it was in there, and Faro liked it but he said “I have much more hair”. I digress…

While I was there they served garlic bread left and right, maybe free, but it was some of the best garlic bread I’ve ever had, and I’m a huge fan. Do they not serve it anymore? Their online menu doesn’t mention it. Seriously, their garlic bread was one of the two major things I remember about that chain, and IMO was trip worthy.

The other thing about Uccello’s was the way things were cooked in the kitchen. If you got Fettuccine Alfredo, you got all the ingredients added into the skillet, not a squirt of sauce from a bag. Everything was cooked to order and nothing was reheated, except maybe potato side dishes? While I was monitoring the kitchen to make sure all the tickets printed correctly, I got to watch a lot of the cooks uh, cook. It looked like something out of a Hell’s Kitchen episode where most things go right.

I saw on Yelp that one reviewer went there just because they have soccer on whenever possible. That made me laugh a bit because one of the head guys (Mario and his brother Mario, seriously not joking, they are Mario brothers) really loves Juventus which is a soccer/football club. I think the other Mario liked AC Milan, but I can’t be sure.

So, was I too harsh about Taco Boy, or is it a regional thing? Does it not taste like cafeteria food to you?

Has Uccello’s kept up the reputation they had when I was there? Their garlic bread was ALWAYS going out to tables, and it was almost a signature thing. Did it go extinct? Even Olive Garden has unlimited breadsticks, and those are not really that great.

Do they still have quality food cooked fresh, or is it more fried bar food now?

Coming out of the pizza business, I had a very high level of respect for how they cooked their food.

I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life pretty much and never heard of either. Must be a regional thing to where you were.

Metro Detroiter born and raised, travelled throughout the state and never heard of either place.

Moved Cafe Society --> IMHO.

Both are Grand Rapids resturants. Maybe be why our other dopers havent heard of them. I have passed Taco Boy a ton, never ate there though. Ucellos is good. I have eaten there a couple of times and it was pretty good.

Were these local chains, or just individual restaurants? I’m from Michigan as well, and never heard of either of them, but don’t get west of Lansing very often. (I think my son’s going to go to Western Michigan, though, so that may change soon.)

probably. I’ve never heard of either.

Taco Boy Has two or three locations in the Grand Rapids area, and Uccello’s has locations in Grand Rapids, Grandville, Standale, Caledonia and I swear there used to be one in Kalamazoo.

Michigan here, but haven’t heard of either of these places. But I just figured it was because you were talking about Lesser Michigan, so it was normal for me not to know what you were talking about.

[hijack]Awesome! If he has any questions about it, send them my way![/hijack]

Add me to the list of life long Michiganders never having heard of either place.

I could have sworn I had responses from a post back when I initially did these installs. I guess not, based on a cursory search.

Maybe a Mod can alter the title to include Grand Rapids?

This thread was all about curiosity, so no matter if it isn’t fruitful.

Oddly, I’ve spent a good portion of my life visiting and eating in GR, and I’ve never heard of these places either. I’ll seek one or both out the next time I’m there.

I briefly lived in Kazoo and visited Grand Rapids a few times. Never heard of these places either.

Looking at the Yelp reviews, it looks like many Taco Boy fans are well aware it’s not authentic.

I suspect Taco Boy might be like a place I’ve visited in Buffalo NY a few times - Mighty Taco. By no means is Mighty Taco great or authentic mexican food, but it fills a niche. It’s fast, it’s not that expensive, and it is Mexicanish. Sometimes that’s all you really want or need. Sometimes locals learn to have some affection for these places just because it’s what they’re used to.

I’m in the far reaches of the county, pass by Taco boy all the time, and Uccello’s too. nevr ate there though. Same with Mr. Burger…

I choose Vitale’s for a sports bar with good pizza etc.

Beltline Bar is a little out of the way for Mexican but twas good last time I was there.

Gilmore group has an excellent collection of restaurants. Flat river grille in Lowell is a fave.

Now Mr. Burger is the food of kings. Especially their olive burger.

Same here. Del Taco is the newest Tex Mex fast food chain around these parts, but I still prefer Taco Bell.

I can’t eat at Chipotle, because there’s cilantro in literally everything, and we all know cilantro tastes like Palmolive.

Grand Rapidian but sadly a vegetarian, so I can’t help you with the taste of Taco Boy’s burrito, but I do pass them almost every day (I live in the area) and they’re never terribly busy. Actually, I think they’ve recently switched over to “Donk’s” now, and we haven’t eaten there.

Personally, I hate Ucello’s, but that’s because it’s dark, noisy, crowded and there’s 600 TVs blaring all the time. I’m not a fan of sports bars, but I have to go there once a year because that’s where my brother insists on having his birthdays. :stuck_out_tongue:

If that’s the place out of all places available, doesn’t it say something about the food at least?
