Microfiber and glasses

Is it safe to use microfiber clothes to clean plastic no glare lens?

I’m pretty sure I just saw a microfiber-pad eyeglass lens cleaner at the drug store.

My optometrist told me years ago that any soft cloth was fine. What wasn’t fine was paper tissue and paper towels, which he said had wood fiber in them, which could cause scratches.

FWIW, my lenses wind up scratched no matter what I do. I suspect angels could come down from the heavens to clean them with their downy wings and they’d still wind up scratched…

So, yes, I used a microfiber cloth for a while, advertised as being lens-safe. My lenses are all scratched up now. It’s correlation, but I don’t know whether it’s causation.

I would imagine that if there is grit on the lens, it wouldn’t matter what you used - you’d still be rubbing abrasive on an optical surface. On a smooth surface though, microfiber should be fine, assuming it’s relatively new.

If anybody knows how to take care of plastic lenses so that they aren’t scratched up after a year or so of daily use, please let us all know.

I’ve had my plastic lens frameless glasses for a couple of years and they have no scratches. BTW, they came with a microfiber cloth for cleaning. My Optometrist said the lenses themselves have a scratch resistant coating. He said the biggest problem is that people clean the lenses with too much pressure, like they’re trying to polish them. I always use a very light pressure and if they have a smudge that doesn’t come off right away, I use an alcohol based cleaner instead of rubbing harder.

I to suffer from the horror of scratched plastic lenses. I used to wear glass, but my pprescription lenses would now be about an inch thick… High Refractive Index plastic is definitely the way to go, except for the innevitable scratching.

One day I was using a CD/DVD scratch repair kit (Future Shop, Best Buy, Radio Scrap, etc for a few bucks) and it occurred to me to try it on my scratched lenses.

Worked like a charm at least on minor scratches, except that it wears off after a few days. About 1 minute to repolish, using the waxy compund.

Try it and see!
