I haven’t upgraded, I’m managed to thwart all of their sneaky attempts and now they regularly remind me that the free updates end in . . . 6 days, 2 hours and 24 minutes.
Ha ha ha! I’m fighting the brave battle. Wish me well.
It’s very hard to believe, with all this desperation about strong-arming everyone possible into upgrading before the end of the line, that they’re actually going to make any money charging for it.
I was caught in that period where if you click no on the update, it basically just starts it for you anyway. I reverted back, immediately, and found out a trick to deny it if you ever get that far. Just click no to everything they ask you to accept.
Read the TOS? NO!
Do you agree to it? NO!
Do you understand your legal rights? NO!
Then I went online, found the actual file that makes you update, and then deleted it from my system. Its been months and I haven’t been bothered since.
Just last week I there was a popup on my gamer warning me that the deadline for the free update was rapidly approaching. The obvious choices were Do it now and remind me later.
In fine print in the opposite corner was a selection for don’t bother me again.
I don’t mind the new OS, but I’m a bit paranoid about potentially bricking my computer by way of screwed-up upgrade. So, I haven’t done it yet.
Here’s what will probably happen: Right at the last moment, I’ll decide to risk it, and go for the upgrade. Something will go tits up. Then, the next day, there will be a message on my screen saying: “Windows 10 installation aborted. Please start over to un-brick computer. To re-initiate upgrade process, please pay lotsa $$$.”
Gadzooks this infuriates me so much. I’m running Windows 7 on our HTPC (home theater) using Windows Media Center which works absolutely fantastic. I actually paid $100 to buy Windows 7 rather than having it coming bundled with the PC.
Now Microsoft has removed Media Center from Windows 10 and is practically forcing us to upgrade to a new product which would make our home theater completely useless. I really don’t understand how this is legal.
Microsoft doesn’t hate you. It’s just that Windows 10 is the One Ring of Bill Gates’ operating systems. Into it he poured his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life.
(Yes, I know Gates no longer calls the shots, but I needed a “he” to make the quote parallel.)
Also, while I no longer work for Microsoft, we used to have regular meetings about our corporate disdain for TokyoBayer. We’d generally ask interns about it to make sure we didn’t accidentally hire anybody who liked the guy.
I built a HTPC around Windows 10 - my first W10 machine. I even ponied up for W10 Pro since I read that you can defer updates that way. I haven’t had any issues that I know of. I use Kodi (new name for XBMC) for vid file management on it and am pretty happy with it.
I also have a W7 Ultimate machine and a W8.1 Pro machine, I think I’ll take the plunge with the 8.1 and give W10 a shot on it. Mainly because DX12 only runs on W10 and that machine is as close to a “gaming” computer as I have.
FWIW, neither machine has ever prompted me to upgrade to W10, not even the little icon in the tray or anything.
In the spirit of bricking a completely functional computer, I installed W10 onto my W8.1 machine. Had to download a W10 vid driver, download JRiver again - it kept all my settings, just needed to install in the new version. Everything else I’ve tried seems to work fine, and I knew where to dig to disable the many “features” I didn’t want.
On a scale of Easy = 1, Hard = 10, I’d say a 2 in hindsight. Before I knew if all my programs would run, anxiety was about a 9.
Might not be a good idea. My (dad’s) computer didn’t auto update, either, and that’s the one that had all the problems. If it doesn’t auto update, it may be Microsoft telling you something.
Though it does mean you get a license, so you could update in the future. Might be nice. I’m still considering reinstalling Windows 7 on my laptop where it failed, just to try the upgrade to 10–even though I’m pretty happy using Puppy Linux for what I actually use the laptop for.
Given Windows 10’s reputation for spying on its user, I think it’s appropriate that his name is an anagram of “A sly data lane”.
And given Windows 10’s ability to push ads on the user: “Satan ad alley” and my personal favorite: “A ad - anal style”.
I’ve always been one of those people who likes Linux a lot in theory but not a lot in practice. But after my Windows 7 boxen are no longer able to get security updates, I’ll have to seriously consider making a permanent jump to that world. At least I have until 2020 to figure something out. One thing Microsoft has always done well is long-term support.
