Microsoft Outlook and Return Receipts

Ok. I’ve checked every single option in Microsoft Outlook and cannot find a way to turn off automatic return receipt generation when I read email. Outlook Express, on the other hand, when I use it at home always gives me a pop-up window asking if I want to send a return receipt (when the sender requests one).

My question: Does anyone know a way to turn off automatic generation of return receipts? I don’t always want people to know I’ve read their mail, it feels like an invasion of privacy, especially when it happens behind my back like that. Outlook doesn’t even tell you it send a return receipt.

I checked deja.com for old newsgroup messages but no such luck.

The following is for “Outlook '98.” Other versions may vary.

[li]Select the “Tools” pull-down menu[/li][li]Click “Options”[/li][li]On the “Preferences” tab, you’ll see a button labeled “E-mail Option…” Click it.[/li][li]In that dialog box, you’ll see a button labeled “Tracking Options.” Click that.[/li][li]Uncheck the box on the line reading “Tell me when all messages have been read.” In fact, you might wanna uncheck all three boxes.[/li][/list=1]

At least I think this is what you are asking.

What version of Outlook are you using??

I’m using Outlook 2000. Try Tools, Options, E-mail Options, Tracking Options, then check (or uncheck) “Process requests and responses on arrival” and “Process receipts on arrival”

Actually, it’s the opposite. Someone keeps sending me email and requesting that I send back a return receipt. My Outlook at work automatically does so. Outlook Express (at home) asks me if I want to send one.

I want my Outlook to not send it automatically, and either ask me, or just not do it at all. Currently it sends it automatically, and the person who sent me the message now knows that I read their email.

Depending on how the server is set up (are you using Outlook at work?) you might not be able to disable the sending of return receipts. Check under the tools menu - options - preferences tab - e-mail options - tracking options. There is a check box that says “Use this option to decide how to respond to requests for read receipts.” It only applies to internet e-mail. On my machine at work, the check box is grayed out so I can’t change the setting.

Geeze. Lousy demands at work. I finally get to hit “submit” and I’m four posts too late.

Ok:

I’m using Outlook 98.

I tried unchecking, under Advanced E-mail Options the “process delivery, read, and recall receipts on arrival” which was the only thing close, but when I send myself an email and check the “tell me when this message has been read” option, when I open the email, it still generates the read receipt.

At least you appear to have the correct answer, tho’.
