Microwaving lamee fabric?

My wife is hoping to make a rice bag for her Grandmother for Christmas. the fabric she’s chosen to use is a towel set that is a lovely shade of blue.

However, along one end, there is what appears to be a section that is shot through with lamee (Lame`? sp?) threads or fabric. They are blue and have a metallic sheen, though they don’t actually appear to be made of metal.

The tag says that the fabric is 100% polyester. No mention of metals at all.
Would this be safe to have in the microwave for a few minutes at at time?

I look forward to your responses, oh wise Dopers!

It’s spelled lamé, and since it usually seems to contain metal threads I’d be wary of putting substantial quantities of it in the microwave. I don’t know if polyester can ever take on the sheen metal imparts.

I would be pretty leery of putting that fabric in the microwave. 100% cotton is the way to go with projects like this. Linen or even silk would also work, but lame or polyester is probably a bad idea. I know some people do use polar fleece, which is a synthetic, but when in doubt, use cotton. It’s durable, easy on the skin, and breathes well.

Polyester is a bad idea for this craft. Cotton is the way to go. Trust me. I’m the girl who nuked her socks in the microwave at work because they were wet. 100% Polyester they were. Do you have any idea what kind of Eldritch stench melting burning wet socks make?

Terrible, trust me.

And the looks that I got from my coworkers…

IIRC the socks reached critical failure after only 30 seconds in the microwave. Those rice pads usually have to go longer than that.

~Cheers!

Okay, I had to Google “rice bag” to see how on earth you make rice in the microwave and found this site, which emphasizes using cotton fabric only. Consider my ignorance of rice bags duly fought.

Jeez, I feel like a heel when I reheat tuna casserole in the office microwave. Wet* socks?*

If your socks were 100% cotton and you did that at my work, I’d give you a look anyway.

I don’t understand everyone elses horror at this. My coworkers gave me such horrified glances, you would think I would have been nuking a basket of puppies!

I actually had to buy the lounge a new microwave just so the receptionist would quit whining that her Hot Pockets tasted like “Burnt Sockits”…

Those things were on your feet. Now maybe you have very clean feet and shoes but some people have an aversion to putting their food and objects that go on feet in close proximity. And if you’ve ever burnt popcorn in a microwave you may understand how long the smell (and sometimes flavor) will persist in the microwave.
