Mid-air in San Diego?

I was just talking to my sister, who lives in San Diego. She said there had been a mid-air collision about 1400 about five miles from her house. Three people suffered fatal injuries.

Do any of you San Diego Dopers have any more information?

Here ya go.

Thanks, Rico. My first hours were at Montgomery. I’ve never flown out of Gillespie. (Used to go to Flight Suits Ltd., and a friend got me into the Air & Space Museum Annex there so I could play in a MiG-17 and a Phantom.) Anyway, I’m not familiar with that area.

Bummer…

Who else thought of this crash when reading the topic title?

The reason I know about this one is interesting. When my then-girlfriend (better known as Heloise) and I spend a few days in San Diego in 2002 (0r was it 2003?), she showed me around her old neighbourhood. After chatting with the current owner of her old house a bit, we drove off. 3 houses down, a huge vacant lot could be observed. “O, yeah!”, she said, “that’s where the plane crash took place. They never built on it again after that.” I asked her when the crash took place, and she said “I dunno, somewhere in the 80’s, I think. Years before I moved to SD, anyway”. She wasn’t sure whether it was a small or a big plane, either.

So, when we got home, I decided to research it. It’s kind of weird, finding out that what really happened on that street in 1978 was the single biggest airplane crash on US soil pre-9/11.

I remember that one. And the crash in Cerritos. I haven’t seen anything on the news about the latest crash. Of course I’m over 1,300 miles away, so it’s not exactly a local story.

Here’s the latest on the crash .
I remember the 1978 PSA crash too. I worked near the County Medical Examiner’s office and they had to rent about 5 refrigerated tractor trailers to store all the bodies. :frowning:

What a dramatic, horrible photo. I can’t tell if it’s the C172RG with the gear extended, or the Skylane. Probably the latter.
