Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, Third Adventure, Ered Lithui Mystery Creature

I love it when I get to take first blood. To the throne room then.

Agreed.

Mulligan takes the lead with Elfstan in the rear.

The party heads down the stairs and gets into the long narrow well lit hall that leads to the main halls. As they go through, they hear the muted roar of the fires of the smithy and some activity but no hammering at the moment.

Mulligan checks the door and peeks into the hall and then looks both ways.

He sees that to the right (south) all is clear and to the left there is a single orc heading into the Great Hall and a group of four orcs all the way at the end of the hall at the doors.

Hmm, give me 5 minutes. I can head down to the end of the hallway by the doors and mysteriously ensure that they do not open. Especially if there is a bar across the door, otherwise a rope lasso across the door which will not let it open. Hopefully the scouting parties will be well away.

After that I suggest our stealthier party members head down and ambush the Orcs at range before you are noticed. We can also secure the door as well to give us more time.

At this point it is likely to get noisy so the burlier members of the party block the main door to the throne room and get ready for a battle if they notice us. If all the action is at that end, hopefully we will not get disturbed by other Orcs around the area.

Any better ideas.

Please

PS: If Gil-Gandel, Ghan, Riglo, Renee or in fact anyone else, would think my idea is foolhardy, idiotic and generally dumb, I would hope they would speak up and avoid me making a fool of myself yet again.

Mulligan’s plan sounds fine to Thoroncir, thanks.

Sounds good to Miron.

If someone can quietly take out the single orc headed into the Hall or simply let him get near the others, I can hit the whole lot with a Sleep. That seems like a good use of the spell.

Deor, what is the radius of that spell?

And are you referring to the Orcs by the door or the Orcs in the Great Hall?

I’ve hit as many as 15 orcs before, and thought I understood from the Hobbits’ reports that the four at the end of the hall are tightly grouped. The one headed down the hall could maybe be ignored until he’s gone.

Just a thought- how are these hallways lit? There aren’t, by any chance, big chandeliers hanging supported by a rope that could be untied by an invisible hobbit, are there? Even if the orcs aren’t standing underneath one, they would probably investigate one if it fell, and maybe walk into a trap.

Alas, Orcs still prefer torches to big chandeliers, that smoke gives a certain ambiance and of course the shadows are important. Gotta have them shadows.

A note on Sleep: All creatures to be affected by the sleep spell must be within a 3" diameter circle.

Well Deor, if you can hit all the guards at the door with a single sleep spell, it might be for the best. The door can be secured afterwards allowing us a bit more freedom to cause havoc.

Otherwise it is back to Plan M.

Somehow I don’t think sleep is going to be as effective as you think in the Main Throne Room.

“Getting Deor all the way down the hall to sleep the orcs might prove tricky”, says Hodwain.

I guess it is Plan M then.

I hope our more stealthy fellows are ready then. Here’s hoping this is a nice quiet job.

It is still June 11th and now 9:20 am. The day is expected to be clear, sunny and hot. It should hit a high of 84°

Mulligan heads down the hall in full stealth mode after a few minutes, Elfstan, Gil-Gandel and Miron follow.

Mulligan gets to the doors, discoverers there are large alcoves to either side of the door and that there is a total of 6 orcs here. There are 3 in the hall and 2 to the left and one to the right. The doors them selves are huge and appear to be metal. The doors are 8’ tall and each is 4’ wide. There is a large 4"x4" wooden bar across them to keep them closed and some long iron wedges to further reinforce them. This is the best lit part of the halls so far with many torches. It should actually give an advantage to those sneaking up from the dark hall behind the orcs.

The door is already better barred than anything Mulligan can do.

Mulligan awaits the approaching party members.

Elfstan checks the doorways first and each time signals for the elves to follow. Activity appears to be low currently except in the throne room and by the door. There appears to be maybe a dozen or more orcs in the throne room. The Elves are within short range of the orcs at the door (about 70’). They decide they can get a little closer as they have some worries over the arc of the arrows in the hall. Elfstan prepares to backstab the third and then find Mulligan who can hopefully remain invisible.

The Elves see the dim bluish glow of Sting and see it sink into an orc that starts falling forward. Their arrows each find a target. Both arrows kill and unsuspecting orc at only 40’ away. Mulligan discovers that there are several more orcs. He heads swiftly to the right to get the single orc. He slashes with Sting and find his mark slaying the orc guard. The other two go after this small invader with a hated elf blade and find themselves confronted by a pair of elves at only 20’ away now. Each arrow finds a mark and Miron’s drops and Gil-Gandel’s is injured. The orc turns to charge the elves and yells and alert that does not travel too far in the long halls. Gil-Gandel’s second arrow strikes true at point blank range and goes through the orcs throat. The guards are down and Mulligan says, “Good job.”

Good job all.

I suggest moving the bodies into the alcoves out of sight where they will not obviously be seen. This main door is not going to open in a hurry from the other side, so that gives us a little bit extra. From this side, it will probably take Gwaelur about 30 seconds to open it.

Give me 5 mins to check out the Throne Room, see if they have any else of note other than their chief.

I wonder if a scream in the hall might get their attention and get them running to the door to be ambushed in close quarters or even hit by sleep.

Comments anyone?

Hmmm. I wonder if you once designed a Stonehenge replica for a British rock group?

Good job in the throne room, guys.

That was the guards at the door at the end of the hall, not the throne room.

I think their Leader is going to be slightly tougher than that.

Hmm, a scream might attract some of the guards, but I’m worried that if the Leader is in the throne room, he’ll elect to run away from the noise and toward reinforcements. It might be smarter to simply charge the room after Mulligan investigates it, so we’ll have at least a small chance of arresting anyone who tries to flee.

Quick Question.

I take it from the description that Mulligan is still invisible but that Elfstan has returned to a visible state.
