You just know there is a secret/trap door behind the throne. Get him Mulligan!
A sharp oath gets uttered and Mulligan is right behind him.
I was expecting this, why do you think I said I would be right beside him. I will mention the last time I tried this the Orc made a show of bravado and went for me. I aim to learn from experience.
That King is mine
Mulligan stabs the armorless King in the back who is scrambling for something on the floor. The damage is only 6 points however. Nearest to Mulligan at this point is actually Hodwain, who now seeing Mulligan knows where to safely swing and strikes the King hard as Mulligan hears a Click. Hodwain cuts the King deeply but the floor drops down and he heads down a slide …
Oh crap.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
Yes, I do realise that Mulligan’s invisibility has gone. Mulligan will probably realise about half way down whichever slide just appeared.

If Elfstan is still close to Mulligan, he will follow Mulligan’s lead. If he is near the doors with the orcs, he will remain there at ready.
I should clarify, if the king has went down a hidden slide and Mulligan followed, Elfstan will follow if close enough. If Mulligan is falling down a trap and the king is still in the throne room, Elfstan will go after the king with Sting (again, only if he is still nearby).
Deor will move quickly off to the right* side of the door and maybe thirty feet away from it (or closer if there’s a wall) and prepare to cast Web across the doorway once a significant number of attackers are in the area of effect. Once the Web is in place, Deor will let the party take out any enemies already in the throne room. If the doorway is narrow enough or short enough, extend the webs down the hallway as far as possible while still keeping the volume filled at least six feet tall.
*If the attackers coming through have shields, they’ll probably be on their left arms, and
Missed my edit window. Continuing from above:
The attackers will likely have their shields on their left arms, and I hope be less likely to run to their left.
Mulligan follows the King down the slide. To the King’s great chagrin, the slide is filthy, moldy and not in great shape and his speed is not as fast as he hoped. Worse yet, having already smoothed the way with his own much larger behind, the smaller Hobbit quickly gains on him. The slide goes a good 30’ down and further away from the main halls (east).
Elfstan races over to his friend’s aid. He sees the slide is climbable and determines that both the King and Mulligan went down.
Hodwain bellows, “I’ll drop a rope down when we are done with the orcs. Good Luck!”
The King lands and has trouble getting to his feet. He is not in the greatest shape. Mulligan lands like a cat and quickly circles around and as the King is getting up, slices into the tendons behind the left knee. The King falls backwards and Mulligan gets another slash at the large orc’s face. He is bleeding badly from his many wounds two are deep. He flairs at Mulligan who dances out of the way and then the King shrieks in fear as Sting arrives with a second Hobbit attached. Mulligan hits him again on the arm and Elfstan finishes the King off with a stab to his large stomach.
Back in the Great Hall, Orcs are beating on the door, but it looks built to hold for a while.
Hodwain bellows, let the misbegotten offspring of Morgoth in, we’ll deal with them swiftly.
Riglo, “Ware the other doors and look for Orcs sneaking in through the rafter entrance.”
Oh, for Explosive Runes and a scrap of paper to shove under the door…
Thanks Elfstan. Let’s leave him here and see if we can help the others.
So do we climb the slide or is there another way out of here?
The slide is a fairly easy climb for a pair of Hobbit treasure finders.
By the glow of **Sting ** you see you are in a small room with a single door in it.
Thoroncir remains on guard by the main doors to the throne room, his longsword at the ready. If any of the sleeping orcs on the floor stir and look like they’re about to wake up and cause trouble, he’ll kill them.
Elfstan checks the king to make sure he is really dead. If he’s only mostly dead, he has some rope that should work nicely for tying him up.
“Let’s climb up and help the Big Folk. We can explore where this door goes later.”
“Do we wish to make a go at cleaning this compound, or not?” Miron wonders curiously, glancing between the door and the throne. “If for any reason we don’t wish to engage with the remaining orcs, we could attempt to conceal ourselves in the king’s escape hatch. Assuming the vampire doesn’t secretly lair in the passageways below, it would probably be reasonably safe.”
Although on second thought, “I think it looks safe” is never a promising statement in these games.
Ghân will knockout the sleeping orcs, then guard Deor. (Fang is by his side throughout.)
Elfstan verifies the King is dead and even the blood flow has slowed to little from his many many wounds. Nothing mortal could survive his injuries and few things magical.
Mulligan climbs back up the slide and Elfstan will soon follow.
Ghân ensures the four orcs should not wake up soon, but he fears he might have been too harsh on one of the orc skulls. He is not sure. The art of knocking out is far from a perfect art, even for a trained healer.
Hodwain says, “Someone, unbar the door and let us be done with this!”
Gil-Gandel spies movement in the rafter coming from the North side, he moves for a better shot and calls out warning, “Yrch! Orc above!” He fired into the target that dodges and slips. Gil-Gandel fires another arrow that hits the hanging orc easily and drops him to the ground dead.
Ghân reminds the scouts to bring up the King’s possessions that were identified as magical / valuable.
He shrugs sadly at the thought of accidentally killing an orc, but since there is a combat going on, it was necessary. (Also some animals have been treated badly by this lot.)
he asks Hodwain and the others to wait before unbarring the door until the orcs in the roof have been dealt with (and we find out where they are coming from.)
If we’re to open the doors, Thoroncir will try to capture one of the just-arrived orcs so we can find out what they were going to report to their late, unlamented king.
