Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, Third Adventure, Ered Lithui Mystery Creature

Miron trades his two old swords for 90 arrows in a large sturdy sack. Suitable for carrying on a pack horse.

I think we are nearly done with purchases.

That evening when you gather again at The Hobbit House and Renee joins you, the question is raised of heading to Imladris escorting Curunauth back to his home and forge.

Renee, “I think my Mother and Uncles might well appreciate it if you can and he mentioned some small compensation for your bother. He often forgets he can do things that no one else can. Perhaps he could do small craft jobs for members when we reach his workshop.
… I can tell you this about him, he is no fighter and not experienced in warfare. He is easily distracted by almost anything and will actually need a little watching that he does not wander off.
… He does not talk about his family much, he feels some family guilt for the grief his father and grandfather and his brothers and especially his great grandfather have caused the world.”

“I, for one, would be happy to help him out,” Miron offers, “and while it might not be practical, perhaps we should consider searching for other travelers wishing to find escort in the same direction? If we are traveling anyway, I can’t think of any reason not to try and fulfill three or four contracts instead of one.”

Okay, I’m not as flush with cash as all that and if we have the ill luck to be up against something that needs +2 or better weapons to hit, I probably can’t do enough damage to put it down with the smallish number of arrows I can afford. Let’s have a dozen of the +1s and another dozen of well-made non-magical arrows. Oh, and a trumpet, please. I keep thinking one would come in handy for signalling.

Once his purchases are complete, Deor will go find a nice quiet park and let Folca hunt and fly (thermals over the City should be wonderful!) while he copies the Fireball on the scroll into his spellbook. He’ll then spend the rest of the few days off in Minas Tirith catching up with friends, flying Folca, and practicing and admiring his new Mallorn staff. He’ll also try out his fire and flying spells to see how the new Dragon affects his spells, and try out fire spells with and without the Dwarven tinderbox to check just exactly how the tinderbox enhances those spells.

The mithril dragon adds +3 to the level of fire and flying spells. This stacks nicely with Deor’s Hawk Pendant which increases the duration of flying spells by a factor of 6 and the Dwarven Tinderbox from the last mission which enhances fire spells in some way. A nice pickup! I’m pleased.

After he’s finished purchasing arrows, Miron will let Swift Wing play with Folca (assuming the hawk and Deor both don’t mind).

He’d like to spend a while tending to his mount and pack horse both, confirming that his horses are happy, his gear is well-packed, and that their blankets, saddles, and straps are all well-oiled and in good condition.

Assuming he has any time after seeing to his critters and their cargo, he’ll offer to hold review sessions for any interested party members to practice the silent communication signals they’ve been working on.

Thoroncir would be glad to give Gil-Gandel any money he might need, having already made his own purchases. “And would anyone like to have a look at Osgiliath?”, he asks his comrades.

Curunauth’s price estimates are much higher than I would’ve guessed. It might be awhile before Thoroncir can afford such magical services.

Thank you, you are knightly in your generosity. However, I believe I will be unable to afford enough arrows of such quality to make a difference, even with your assistance. I am sure we will have alternatives should we find ourselves in such a pinch - we have Gwaelur’s marvellous new bolts for dire emergencies, and several spellcasters.
::Hearing Deor rejoicing over his new item::
Splendid! Are you now able to cast fireball? That will make an immense difference.

Miron, I would be very interested in your silent code - well done. Also, once I have had a chance to work out some trumpet calls, I will start to rehearse the party in those.

Suppose we swing by Osgiliath on the way up to Rivendell? It will not add much to the overall journey.

Wait, you are still 4th. You cannot copy the fireball or cast fireball or fly. I think you have levitate. Did you want to try that?

Oh, I thought I could copy it but not cast it- I’ll wait then. I do want to try Levitate, and also Burning Hands.

No, Deor’s just a smidge under 5th level. Next mission we’ll add Fireball to the arsenal.

Deor’s Burning Hands did a full 8hp dam in its 3’ long 120º arc. Apparently 4hp for level +3 for the Mithril Dragon and +1 for the Tinder Box.

The Levitate now has a 14" range, lasts 42 turns (7 hours. Wow!) It has a weight limit of 700 lbs at 4th level. This could be huge for the Treasure finders consider how long it lasts.

If it exists in the campaign, there is a 1st-level spell called Write which does allow you to copy over-level spells into your spellbook - the only advantage is that this may be more secure than a fragile scroll. It does have a chance of fouling up however. Best to keep that valuable scroll in a safe place if, come your next level, you’re going to be tossing around 9th-level fireballs!

When he hits 5th, Deor will have a 0% chance of failure. I am not sure he should risk it with the write spell.
Actually at 5th level he will be casting 8d6 Fireballs with an unknown affect from the Tinderbox.

Ghân checks with Fang about the pack dominance. Is Fang OK being third behind Ghân, then Anca?

If so, then the next step is indeed the Animal Friendship spell!
(DM, Let me know if this delay means you need a reroll…)

Ghân accepts, pays 50gp and uses Speak to Animals, Cure Light Wounds, herbal cures and Goodberries as necessary.

It’s good he already has a name. Otherwise this party would name him ‘Fluffy’ or ‘Kitten’!

‘Kamikaze’ Deor is getting Fireball soon?
Based on my extensive experience with enthusiastic pupils reaching 5th MU, Ghân will be loading Protection v Fire from then on!

Ghân knows that the two canines will have to sort out pecking order on their own. If you ask Fang before it happens he would be offended greatly even though it looks like Anca will subdue him swiftly.

Glee, you should already have Prot vs. Fire cast on yourself. It last for you and you alone until it is used up. That is 36 HP of magical fire stopped and saving throws. Check the reading of the 1st Ed Druid Spell. (pg 58)

As far as I can tell you have 690 gold left, 140 in gold and 550 in chits. Anything else you wish to pick up?

I just realized you had 240 arrows to start with on your pack horse. You did not need 90 to replenish this. I would say you have lost about 40. Should I up your arrows by 50 or add 5 gp to your character.

That poor, poor horse. I’d up the arrows by 50; in the long run, I think shooting things will be more valuable to the party than the gold.

Gil-Gandel at 571gp 450 is in chits.
Miron is down to 52 gp
Glee is down to 690, 550 in chits.
Deor is down to 43 in Gold.
Mulligan 2178gp (2000 in chits)
Elfstan 2272gp (2000 in chits)
Thoroncir 2240gp (2000 in chits)
Gwaelur has traded his armor for a very nice Xbow and has to make a decision on his remaining 2145 (2000 in chits)

OK, I wasn’t sure if one being a wolf and one being a dog matters.
As long as they don’t do any serious damage to each other they can decide dominance for themselves.

Those who quote 1st Edition to me shall perish by it. :stuck_out_tongue:
On page 58 it says ‘Otherwise the spell lasts for 1 turn per level…’

Ghân really likes his Scarab for Summon Insects.
Is there something in his price range to extend ‘Protection v Fire’, or could he arrange that his (+2) Scimitar could be improved by ‘Flame Blade’ (e.g. doing extra fire damage and v Undead)?
