Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, Third Adventure, Ered Lithui Mystery Creature

Elfstan peers at the sky wondering about the coming rain.

“Do we want to find shelter from the rain or should we wrap things up here and get moving? It would be a shame if the rain completely destroyed the tracks that Riglo mentioned.”

He then helps with whatever chores are necessary.

So Brin burns the stripped down bodies, including the expired orc leader. The party has a supplement of fresh venison for lunch and for later that day.

The young polecat tries some of the proffered meat and actually prefers it from the Hobbit’s quick stew.

There are some items to carry off or hide. What does the party do with them? ‘

Magic Chain mail (Dol Amroth style of +1 top +3 AC*)
Magic Short Composition Bow (probably made by the Haradrim)

7 short bows
3 long knives
4 short swords
8 dozen short bow arrows.
small pouches, skinning knives, sharpening stones, some cord

Brin: Unless their sundry equipment is in better shape than ours, I don’t see a need to tote the extra equipment. Best just to take the valuable items and leave the rest with the bodies.

Ghân asks if anyone wants the Magic items - always worth using if we can…

Yes, bring the magic items along - we can discuss their distribution as we go. Then let’s get moving while we still have a trail to follow. (Ghân, how long until the rain hits?) As to the orc, we tried to be merciful but it wouldn’t have any of it - and perhaps, by its own lights, a quick death while fighting to escape is more merciful.

Nobody has made a jump for the Magic Chain Mail??

Good grief, what are you guys wearing?

Ghan is wearing wooden armour.

Our scouts and casters tend to wear leather, so it’s down to the Fighters to claim…

Ghân tells Gil-Gandel (and the party) exactly what the Predict Weather revealed.

(Ghân accepts the orc was doomed with such an attitude.)

After hearing Mulligan, Thoroncir expresses interest in using either or both. He currently wears very similar non-magical chain and has a normal long bow. He of course does not expect to retain these items, but would be happy to clean them up and try them out.

The chain would fit Gil-Gandel or Thoroncir with ease and probably Brin. The bow could only be an improvement over a normal Long Bow.

Riglo says, “Clean it quick and let’s be off. I don’t care about these orcs, the strange footprints may be far more important.”

Ghân states that it benefits the party if Thoroncir (or Brin or Gil-Gandel) tries out these magic items.

Next, as Rigolo and Brin have said, leave the rest of the stuff and let’s go look for the creature.

So Thoroncir dons the magic armor and carries the magic bow. He carefully rolls up his chain mail and wraps it in his blanket and attaches it to the bottom of his backpack. His longbow he regretfully leaves behind, hanging high in a tree, as high as one of the Hobbits is willing to hang it for him. It is of course unstrung and hopefully camouflaged.

The party sets back out to try and get to the evening camp site before the rain hits.

Riglo leads the party swiftly and by 5pm the skies are dark but the Hawks can still fly. Brownie even takes a turn in the rotation.

Riglo gets the party moving faster for a final push to a place that offers some protection up ahead. It isn’t much, but it should help.

The party makes it to an area with large brambles that are tightly packed and at least 8’ high. Inside the brambles the ground is a bit lower and the Hobbits, Gwaelur, Ghân & even Renee can stand up. Riglo quickly rigs some tarps and provides a partial roof for the camp.

“I think we should be safe here for the night. Let’s plan on a cold camp tonight and we’ll set out at first light in the morning.”

How are we set for blankets? The ground won’t hold much of the sun’s warmth once the rains come. We’ll be sleeping close together tonight.

Everyone has a blanket and it should not get too cold in June down here. Almost everyone also have cloaks. Cloaks are a great help for keeping warm at night. Some have Elven Cloaks and so don’t even have to worry about it.

How are we doing watches? Same order as before?

Elfstan sighs about the cold camp and thinks about the cooked venison that could have been. As the party settles in, he decides that this is the time to mention something he’s been thinking about.

“I can leave Sting unsheathed in the middle of camp to detect orcs for all of the watches. We just need to have a blanket handy to throw over it if it starts to glow. We don’t need it giving us away. I’ll listen to other suggestions too.”

The Watches are in the Op.

So they are.

I’m up for watch then. You all rest soundly.

I’m no ranger, but if the skies are dark by five o’clock in June, then something’s amiss. Let’s keep a sharp eye out, get some good rest, thank Riglo for finding us this spot under cover, and hope for the best.

Ooooh, ooooh, oooh, I want those small pouches! Can’t have too many places to hide material components. The cord would be nice for tying up sleeping opponents (which I do seem to run into) and I’ll take the best of the skinning knives, with Gwaelur’s help in determining the best of the lot, as long as no one else objects. Not for defense, naturally, but just to have handy.

I’ll load Identify instead of Shield in the morning and get those weapons checked out. There’s no Constitution loss with that excellent gem we picked up in Minas Tirith, so I’ll check them out before the hobbits make breakfast and we won’t lose any time. Thoroncir, you’re naturally welcome to the magic bow and armor, and I think that they’ll act normally even if we’re ignorant of their properties, but I’d kind of recommend waiting until we know exactly what they do before actually using them.

Miron doesn’t seem to mind the rain much… his elven cloak will have him sleeping quite nicely, thank you.

He will, however, take the chance to fill his 3 wineskins with rain; you can never have enough water.

Hmm, wake me up when it’s watch time.

Zzzzzzzz

The rain is very nasty by 6pm. It is a full blown thunder storm with hail at times. It is wet and miserable and lasts for about 3 hours in all and then results in a cool damp night at about 60°. However there are no encounters.

Deor performs the identifies on the two items using two spells.

The Chain Mail is +2 and will not rust. It allows the wearer to swim in the armor (if they can swim). (This is worth more than +2 chain but less than +2 Elven Chain)

The Magic Short Composition Bow has a +2 to hit and damage and adds strength for penetration and damage. It can handle any strength from 12 to 19. The bow string will not break and can remain strung. It could be used even from horseback, but not while the horse is trotting or charging. (This should be considered a very valuable item)

Note in the morning Deor has the sniffles but Renee has some herbal cures to help him greatly, including the use of Athelas in a pot of boiling water and a blanket while he inhales the fragrant fumes.

The party did not make it through the night without getting wet and muddy, but Deor’s sniffles are the worst of the damage.
