Middle Finger Pain: Arthritis, Carpal Tunnel or a simple Jam. l

Mrs.Phlosphr is having some pain in one finger - her middle finger. No, she has not been flipping too many people off [sup]to my knowledge[/sup]. But it came on rather abruptly, and has lasted more than a few weeks. It’s not constant pain all day, but randomly throughout the day, but very sore in the morning…

She is in her 30’s healthy, has a history if rhumatoid arthiritis in her family…

I am not looking for the advice of a doc, just anecdotes really.

So is she flipping the bird too much, or could it be just a jam - I know ligament problems take a while to heal?

I have had a similar experience with pain in my index and middle fingers that appeared without a proximate cause and lasted for some months. My doctor said it was “trigger finger” and didn’t go into great details on the cause, except to say that it came about from a narrowing of the ligament channels (?) in the fingers. I explained that it had first occured within a month of quitting smoking, but he didn’t comment on that.

FWIW, now, a year later, it is not a significant problem and has seemed to resolve on its own. But if it recurs or gets worse, I will need to see an orthopedist about it. There is a simple (although painful sounding) office proedure to correct it.

Google “trigger finger” for better explanations and to see if they explain your wife’s symptoms - and see your doctor.
