I didn’t see a *Middleman * thread, even on search. Yeah, I know. It’s on ABC Family, so who’s going to watch it?
Let’s hope everybody.
I don’t rave about tv pilots, ever. But this is the real thing. The superhero/spy/X-files/Due South spoof you’ve been waiting for without realizing it. The tone is perfect. It has the best Avengers spoof ever filmed. Even the Cute Young Thing with more collagen in her lips than Julia Roberts kissing Donnatella Versace looks like a cross between Tina Fey and Jessica Alba and in a good way. The Hero is 40s serial handsome and swears like one as well.
The show’s blog page has a downloadable version of the pilot.
Otherwise, Mondays at 8:00. ABC Family. Whatever the heck number that might be on your local cable.
Watch it. Let’s hope that the rest of the episodes approach this one in quality.
Based on your recommendation, I will watch. I saw an ad and it looked like fun. I looked at the regular ABC schedule and couldn’t find it, so I thought it hadn’t started yet. ABC Family, got’cha.
I wanted to watch it but no cable so I am going to download the pilot, will have to do it at work with the T1 connection. I really hope it does well because I have been a fan of the writer/creator for a few years now since he was writing for Lost. He always seemed to post more than the other writers at The Fuselage and I ended up finding his livejournal from there and following his career since then. Met him at a Dragon*con and he’s a genuinely nice and funny guy.
Well, sorry to burst your enthusiasm. I’m a great fan of this genre of show, but dagnabit… the sarcasm was so dry it was almost arid in the show. It was almost making fun of itself as it went along.
Also on June 23, prior to the second episode. Which is good, because I’m already recording two shows on Sunday evening. I just added both the Monday episodes to my DVR, since it sounds interesting enough to be worth checking out.
I enjoyed it for a first go-round, but this is one of those “can they maintain that meta-ironic edge while getting you engaged in the characters?” situations…I would love the answer to be Yes, experience suggests it is not gonna be easy…
It was a little too self-consciously heavy on the snark, but it was still a lot of fun and Natalie Morales is a really hottie (though she better have at least one scene in each ep. where she’s wearing glasses). I’ll definitely stick with it for now to see if they find a good groove (like they did with Chuck) or if it just meanders around too much (like I felt happened to Reaper).
Saw the pilot (though not last night’s episode). I do like the way they actually cite the relevant pop culture by name, and don’t bother to explain it. Thee’s a lot of toss-out gags (like the gorilla quoting Goldfinger, or the Avengers parody) that isn’t explicitly acknowledged or explained. I can see someone putting together a footnote page for each episode (a la the Simpsons guides, or the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen webpages) to point out what’s being referred to.
I watched half of the pilot. Loved The Avengers parody. Didn’t care for The Cute Young Thing. Too much snark – it was wearing. Not sure if I’ll watch again. Summer really puts me off TV, even original, well-written TV.
meh. Watched both episodes last night. I found it too stilted performance wise and maybe too much effort to make sure it stays a family show. I can take it of leave it.
