Mike Tyson Mysteries is a new cartoon on Adult Swim (so, sadly, episodes are only 11 minutes long. ARGH!)
You can’t stream it anywhere yet, unless you’ve got a cable subscription and then you can stream it on the AS web site.
I am totally in love with this show! I don’t know if it’s because I’ve happened to watch both episodes at like 3 AM after eating a bunch of Halloween candy, or if because it’s just that good. But for me every joke lands and every episode has a plot you can follow and the whole thing is both absurd and amazing.
It stars Mike Tyson as Mike Tyson, Jim Rash (Dean Pelton from “Community”) as a snarky ghost, Norm MacDonald as a guy who got turned into a pigeon (and who basically acts like Norm MacDonald), and a woman named Rachel Ramras from The Groundlings as Mike Tyson’s adopted teenage daughter.
Together they all solve mysteries. A total send-up of Scooby Doo, of course but…damn. I love it!!!
I was at the San Diego Comic Con panel for this. It was alternately hilarious and horrifying. A lot of nervous laughter. Mike would say the most off-the-wall things and you couldn’t always tell if he was in on the joke, completely insane, or confused and just trying to cover.
Same thing with the show. Some of the crazy things Mike says are probably scripted, but I think there are some that are just him being nuts during the recording and they just write around it.
Like most Adult Swim stuff, I love the meta-humor aspect. Namely, that if Tyson had peaked about ten years earlier he probably would have had a godawful, Hanna-Barbera Pacific rim sweatshop animated Saturday morning cartoon show just like Mr. T and Gary Coleman…
Yep, it’s awesome. Who would have guessed decades ago that Mike Tyson would be involved in comedy and have a lauded one-man-show by 2014 after all of the rape, and ear-biting, and baby eating, etc.
I missed the first one, but the chess episode and astronaut episode are hilarious. I like how there’s zero backstory too - why is the Asian girl his daughter, what’s up with the Marquess (aka Marcus), and how did Pigeon become a pigeon?
Actually there is a bit of backstory - but it was all in episode one
The pigeon was turned into a pigeon by his wife (“ex wife!”)
The girl was left on Tyson’s doorstep as a baby (“probably because your mother didn’t want you! Mystery solved!”)
It’s not clear what the Marquess’s deal is, but he seems to be responsible for Tyson’s new…demeanor. “You got what you wanted. He’s no fun, he doesn’t party, he doesn’t beat up random people. You basically turned him into you. 'Cept he’s not a closeted homosexual.” He told Tyson to “stop living for yourself.” But Tyson thinks Yung Hee told him that while she was a baby. Even though we all know babies can’t talk.
I can’t believe it took me this long to make the connection with Marquess of Queensbury rules, which presumably outlaw ear biting. Maybe it’s because Mike keeps calling him Marcus.
That asshole Turner pulled Adult Swim from Dish Network, so I don’t get to see it! No more “Black Jesus”, “Boondocks” or anything else worth a shit.
Goddammit! 400 fucking channels and I only ever watched about 5 of them. Now only about 3.
