Apparently his 4 year old daughter Exodus got tangled up in a cord on a treadmill was found hanging by her seven year old brother.
Horrible story.

Horrible story.
How utterly terrible! I hope she survives being named Exodus.
Seriously, I hope she pulls through.
Yeah I read about this last night… terrible thing. I hope she makes it and is ok.
It is a terrible story and I hope she makes a full recovery.
In the story I read last night (I believe on Yahoo) It talked about Tyson’s daughter, Exodus and in the next paragraph it said “Authorities declined to release the girl’s name” (or something similar) Huh? Perhaps Exodus is a code name?
That’s a shame. I hope she pulls through but it doesn’t sound very good.
It’s her real name. It’s either left over from an older version of the story, or it indicates the reporter got her name from somewhere other than ‘authorities.’
What a sad story. It sounds like she was probably hanging for a while before discovery.
This is a lot like those cases where kids get strangled in the cord for window blinds. Unfortunately I can see how a parent might not realize what a threat a cord can pose.
Sad.
I recently watched the bio Tyson (good doc by the way) and while definitely biased towards Tyson, it seemed quite fair and was sure to paint him as a good father who dearly loved his kids. Even his ex wife said so. He may not be a great person otherwise, but he does seem to have one bright spot at least.
I can attest to the fact that younguns love the treadmill and get hurt on them quite frequently. I hope she’s okay.
Oh geeze…that sucks. Pull through, little Exodus!
This is absolutely heart-wrenching news. This happened to a cousin of mine, and unfortunately she was found too late. Tyson has had a tough life and seemed like he was finally getting it on track. I will be amazed if this doesn’t completely derail him again. Poor guy.
I’m having trouble figuring out where exactly a cord would go on a treadmill. Unless it was the power cord, but I can’t see that being something you’d get strangled by accidentally unless you were in a Final Destination sequel.
There’s the emergency cord that some people actually tie to the handle, to keep it out of the way :smack:, and then there’s the power cord. Two different cords, 4 year old . . . shouldn’t be hard to imagine a scenario.
I think, though I am not sure, that treadmills have cords that connect to the key on one end and your wrist on the other end ,that kills the motor if you fall (like on jet skis).
At my gym, most people do that. Is that not a good idea?
Well, no, and double no around children.
Well, kids aren’t allowed in the gym. But wouldn’t they be more likely to get it tangled/strangled if it wasn’t tied around the treadmill, but rather hanging loose?
Anyway, I’ve never actually used it because it seems like way too much work. Also, even if you did just stop running or trip, wouldn’t you fall off before the treadmill could automatically stop?
I don’t think Mike Tyson’s daughter was in a gym. To the rest: I dunno, go experiment.
You’d fall off, but the treadmill would hopefully stop before your clothing/hair/fingers/etc. got tangled in the rollers still being driven by a powerful electric motor, while you’re too far away from the controls to turn it off.
Next time you go to the gym, bring a chicken drumstick with you. Compare it to the size of your fingers. Bring the treadmill up to your normal workout speed, and carefully put the drumstick into the rollers. Examine the devastation visited upon the drumstick, and imagine it was one of your precious body parts instead.
Oh that thing. I think that would be even less likely to strangle than the power cord, seeing as it’s designed to detach. I can’t imagine that the force needed to strangle a kid wouldn’t first cause the thing to pop out, even if the other end was attached to the handle.
The ones at my gym look kind of like a card; they’re designed to be pulled straight back, I don’t know if downward force would pull it out or not. And remember we’re talking about the downward force of someone who is too young to be using it.
As a parent, I can pretty much unequivocally state that:
It’s a fine line parents of small children walk every single day. I don’t say this as a fan of Tyson’s, which I’m not, particularly, but, well, as a parent who has managed to get three children through early childhood without letting them kill themselves. Trust me when I say it’s as much luck as skill.
My thoughts and prayers are with little Exodus (what the hell kind of name is that for a kid??), and the family!
