Partly OCD, partly because my self-employed work at home business is proofreading transcripts for court reporters covering depositions, court and regulatory hearings, and the occasional trial, most of which is highly time-sensitive, so if I just had one of each category of machine and it crashed I’d be in big trouble. Also, as long as a piece of tech is still working for me, why trash it? Hence keeping the two offline desktops and the aging printers; as long as they still serve a purpose, they’re worth keeping. When I have multiple jobs come in to print out I’ve had as many as all five of the downstairs printers banging their share of the work out simultaneously.
ETA: No, I can’t just proofread the drafts on the computer screen for several reasons I won’t clutter up this thread with.
One of the Dopers who hasn’t posted in many years, and who I have lost touch with shared a story with me. He was an IT professional. He shared with me that back in college, his school had a display of parts from Eniac. After weighing things carefully, he pocketed one of the parts. He still had it years later.
In general, I do not approve of theft. But I would have been strongly tempted to do the same.

No, “a fly is not a fly”. My comment asking for ID was before the OP physically described the flies so possibilities included fruit flies and the mentioned drain flies. But even with the general description, there are flies that feed off of and breed on rotting meat, flies that feed off and breed on animal droppings, flies that feed on and breed on earthworms, as someone else posted, etc.
I think you could probably have pointed that out in the thread. I had a hell of a time figuring out what was causing our fly problem and I still don’t know. That is useful information.
The response took several edits on my part to trim down the oozing contempt I was originally including. I was definitely writing a pit response. (And I did point out facts in the original thread, but Beck chooses to walllow in her ignorance.)
Myself, for the past few years I have black soldier flies coming in (which I never saw before the last few years). They are wasp mimics, even have transparent areas on their abdomen to make it look like they have a thin waist. But there aren’t many of them, and they provide entertainment and nutritional suppliment for the cats that stand staring at the windows waiting for one to get stuck there so that they can catch and eat it.
Sometimes one must accept that others are holier/smarter than thou.
This board has actually improved my critical thinking; when I posted something and people flamed me for it, I thought, “They aren’t doing this for sport. Something is wrong with what I posted and I hadn’t realized it.”
