The only one still hung up over that, fucking obsessed with it, is you. That issue was resolved almost a month ago until you keep bringing it up. It was a minor thing that led to a minor gripe, and came and went pretty quickly. It wasn’t a big issue until you turned it into one.
There is something seriously wrong with you. I’m not joking or trying to even make an insult with that. There really is.

@wolfpup , you may really believe that your recent posts in this thread about language use are motivated by the fact that proper writing is a “hot button” issue for you, and not by your defensiveness toward Beck. I certainly have no trouble believing that you do indeed care about language proficiency.
But your posts in this thread do not come across as impartial. Any rational, objective reader is going to draw a clear connection between your dislike of seeing Beck criticized and your vociferous engagement in side issues like whether or not it is possible to discern from just a few sentences that someone is not a native English speaker.
I too tend to be picky about language. I don’t recall specifically if I’ve ever told a new poster that we appreciate careful writing and proper punctuation in these parts - if I did, I hope I did so in a cordial, encouraging fashion - but I’m certainly capable of it. Yet here we are - engaging on the opposite sides of the recent arguments in this thread. Why do you suppose that is?

I absolutely understand what dictionaries are for. I just somewhat regret that we don’t have the equivalent of the Académie Française to uphold language standards, and that our reference books are followers rather than leaders.

Yeah, I said the same thing upthread. I treat “white knighting” similarly to “woke”, as a banner of pride, so I objected to it being used in that particular case. There wasn’t really any defending going on, just lashing out, unnecessarily in my opinion.
Besides, the original concept of white knighting was that you were trying to get something out of it. Like to get something from the person, or to make yourself look good. I hate the idea that you can only defend someone because there’s something in it for you.
I’ll go ahead and make this post because I do think my position’s a bit different, but I won’t belabor any more since y’all are kinda done with it.
