Have you no spiked garter? That’s when the real fun begins
Pull over, sonny. I’m writing you a ticket.
But ossifer, I was doing less than 55mph.
That’s another ticket!
Fewer?
“Uh, that’s ‘Sonny’? You know, with a capital ‘S’ because it’s being used as a form of metonymy?”
I think of metonymy as when you refer to something/some people by one of its/their characteristics, usually the place of origin: “Houston wants us to increase our sales volume” or “The White House says the GASF is the best attended fair in the history of the universe.” Obviously, the city of Houston doesn’t literally want anything, and the White House is just a building that can’t speak, but that’s metonymy for you.
So I’m not sure how “sonny” (or “Sonny”) is metonymy, but happy to learn!
That’s another ticket alright! Or is it all right? And what if you were going more than 55? Would that be a ticket, or would it be ticket-worthy if you were going over 55?
Maybe @wolfpup can prescriptivize us out of this mess.
a figure of speech in which a concept is referred to by the name of something associated with that thing or concept. (Wikipedia)
Sonny is more of a sobriquet, but since it’s only used for males, it seemed to meet the criterion. It doesn’t meet the part-for-whole form of metonymy (“Man, them’s some sweet wheels!”)
FWIW, that’s not metonymy, it’s the related concept of synecdoche, where there’s a literal connection of part-for-whole or whole-for-part being used to reference the object. Metonymy relies on a non-literal associated concept, as in the examples that @CairoCarol gave.
True. Thanks.
You know this, the world knows this.
“A rationalization is better than sex. Have you ever gone more than one week without one good juicy rationalization?”
–Jeff Goldblum, The Big Chill
Rationalizion for not getting any, sounds like.
At 67, I’ve can look back over the decades and confirm that I had sex a few times that I had to rationalize.
Retrospectively, it was rarely if ever a good idea.
“Tho” is just leftovers after you take the “ugh!” out of the “though”.

(how’s that for a dumbass quote? Never the less, I love it)
For a ‘mild pitting’ this has sure got legs.
The Pitting of Beck is mild. It’s another person in this thread who got the severe Pitting.
Fun for all, Beck included, one hopes.
Winner winner, chicken dinner!! ![]()
Hey @Beckdawrek, from the thread you started that got locked by the mods, how should we interpret this bit?
is your exit imminent, or is this more “woe is me, look at me” bullshit?
@chela, you might want to set an alarm for three weeks from now to bitch about the unfairness this vicious attack.
