So, I was wondering, is it just the nostalgia of youth speaking here, or was Anthony’s pizza a lot better 10 years ago than it is now? Anyone here have an opinion?
I mean, it’s possible that I’ve just hit a string of places (Fort Sill, AAFES HQ in Dallas, and Fort Huachuca) where they can’t make the pizza right or something, so I just want some other opinions.
From what I remember (Army '93-'97, Ft. Sill, Redstone Arsenal, Ft. Riley, Ft. Irwin), the pizza was always crap. I’d totally forgotten it was called Anthony’s, but as soon as I read your post I could call up the taste in my mind. Yep, pretty shitty. It was the sauce, IIRC.
I love the Anthony’s Pizza on the base near me… I can’t speak to whether or not it used to be better though – I had never eaten there before we moved near this base (~ 5 years ago). But it’s so good now I can’t really imagine it being much better years ago. If that makes sense.
I used to like it, though it’s been at least 15 years since I had it. It doesn’t taste like anything else, though that’s hardly a ringing endorsement. I’d probably go for a Robin Hood sandwich, anyway.
I like a slice of the combo if it’s freshly out of the oven.
But the quality seems to have a lot to do with which base you’re on.
A slice of their cheese pizza that’s been sitting there for a few hours isn’t worth using as a boot insole.
Robin Hood started out good but it seems like their sandwiches quickly became all bread no meat. I order from them if I want the olive garnish and side of chips. The sandwich sucks.
Yeah, that has occured to me. The stuff at Fort Huachuca isn’t too bad (If I happen to be in the PX around lunchtime, I eat at the Anthony’s Pizza there), though nowhere near as good as I remember it being at Yokota Air Base when I lived there around 1991 (every Thursday night, our family had the choice of ordering Anthony’s Pizza or going to the Officer’s Club for Mongolian Barbecue, and on occasion, dad would order pizza and we’d eat it in his room while watching Home Improvement when Mom and my sister we out doing their Girl Scouts stuff).
If you have a chance to try the pizza at AAFES HQ in Dallas, just choke yourself with an old shoe, it’ll taste better. My mom insists it’s because they cook it too fast and too hot in order meet the lunch rush. I’ll have to ask my friend at Tinker AFB to tell me how it compares to other places.
I have never eaten Anthony’s Pizza, nor do I have any real desire to do so. I have been fortunate enough to be able to eat superb food on the economy from most of my duty stations.
AAFES seems to unerringly choose the worst in concessions for their military malls. Robin Hood, Charlie’s, Anthony’s, Church’s. It’s nearly impossible to find a good lunch on the local AFB unless you go to the golf course.
