Yes, but as with anything, YMMV. I can tolerate very small amounts of soy, but if I had a soy-based ‘milkshake’ or had it on a bowl of cereal, I would get a raging migraine.
It doesn’t cause the intestinal upset you experienced, but certain foods are migraine triggers for me, and soy is one of them.
And, Vinyl Turnip, people can be allergic to soy–my daughter is, so we’re sticking with the dairy. You might want to get that checked out with an allergist, unless you’re in the habit of eating tofu or whatever with no side effects.
Silk all the way. I got a violent awakening about my lactose intolerance one day in high school when I decided it’d be fun to drink four cartons of chocolate milk at lunch. Then I started trying (and hating) a bunch of different milk subsitutes. In college, I decided to be vegan and gave Silk a try. It’s vastly superior in taste and texture to other soy milks, and I even like it better than cow milk. Ultimately, I missed cheese too much and therefore demoted myself to vegetarian, but I still only drink Silk. Batsinma Belfry is very right about the coating - my glasses are all becoming opaque. It’s cute.
When my daughter was a toddler (she turns 5 today, FYI), we had 4 different kinds of milk in the fridge. Skim for me, whole milk for the girl, lactose free milk for the boy and Silk for my wife. We cook with it now too, as my wife as discovered she is allergic to dairy products. It’s been fine in most recipes so far. I can take Silk on cereal, but I don’t much like the taste otherwise. We use the Silk creamer too, the French Vanilla is quite good.

Dairy is Delicious.
That should be their slogan, 'cause it’s true. A vegetarian friend talked me in to trying Silk once… hahahahahaha. Yeah. No thanks. 2% minimum, whole when I deserve a treat, and as much aged cheddar as I can afford in my diet without totally blowing away any appearance of eating healthy
I like Organic Valley soy milk, personally, but Silk is pretty good too. I had some cow milk over the Tgiving weekend at my in-laws’ house and was surprised by how gross it tasted. I used to like it, but not anymore. I like that soy-ey goodness.
I haven’t had any milk substitute that I found to be very palatable. They all have a fake-sweet-flavor and wheaty aftertaste that I don’t care for. It seems they need the ‘flavor’ of almonds or vanilla or something to cover up the mis-flavor of the soy (I guess).
Recently, I tried some new milk- like product called “You-nique” (or something) that also promised to lower cholesterol, but it still left something to be desired. While I’ll continue to try the new products, I’m sticking with my 2% cow juice.
Yeah, that’s the odd part: I do eat tofu/tempeh/veggie burgers from time to time (though not obsessively; I’m a staunch carnivore) and have never noticed a problem before.
It’s possible I just got a bad batch of Silk, but the experience makes me less than eager to try it again.
I do like the vanilla Rice Dream. I find it helps if you don’t mentally associate it with milk, but just think of it as a unique beverage. (It reminds me more of the horchata a local taqueria sells.)
