A limited theatrical release on Sept 12 and a video release in October.
Millenium Actress is an animated film about the life a Japanese actress told in flashback. It’s directed by Satoshi Kon who previously directed Perfect Blue.
I haven’t seen MA yet but it sounds like a wonderful film. Here are some early reviews on Rottentomatoes. There is also a link to trailers and stills.
The film probably won’t make much money at the boxoffice but I think it will get good reviews. I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets nominated for an Oscar.
The reviews link doesn’t appear to work properly Here is the link to the main page for the film:

I don’t know much about anime, so I casually skipped over it in the movie listings. However, once I read what it was about, I became much more interested–how many animated films explicitly reference Ozu after all?
It’s playing here in SF and I’ll be catching it soon.
Have you seen it, CP?
No, it’s not playing where I Iive. But I won’t have to wait too long for the DVD.
Since I have only seen one film by Ozu and a couple by Kurosawa I probably won’t get most of the Japanese film references but I look forward to reading what you have to say about that and the film as a whole.
Incidentally the film is doing pretty well with the critics: 96% at Rottentomatoes with good reviews from the NYTimes and the LATimes. I hope Ebert , who generally likes anime, promotes it on his show.
