Satoshi Kon has died

Director of Paprika, Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfothers, Perfect Blue, and Milennium Actress.

I’m stunned.

He was 47.

Damn. To think of all the great things he has done and the things he could have been doing…

The parade of insanity from Paprika, one of my favorite movies from the 2000-2009 decade.

Total insanity!!

Looks like cancer, not a heart attack, by the way.

Cancer kills Satoshi Kon.

Ironic that one of the subplots of that film involved an aspiring filmmaker who died of cancer at an early age.

Godspeed, Kon-san. You’ll be missed.

Wow this is a shock. I have seen Millenium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers and am looking forward to watching Paprika some time. Kon was definitely one of the most talented and original filmmakers around and he will be missed.

Perfect Blue is one of my all-time favorite movies. This is really too bad. :frowning:

I’ve barely seen even a sampling of his work, but I’d still have traded a lot of other people in place of him. :frowning:

Everyone should add Paprika to their Netflix queue ASAP.

Not to mention that Paprika has the best movie poster of all time.

I’ve only seen *Tokyo Godfathers. *But I liked it.

I love both Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers. What is particularly impressive about them is how different they are from each other, so that it’s hard to believe that they are from the same writer/director/animator. I didn’t enjoy Paprika so much, finding it hard to follow the story line, but the animation was brilliant in that too. It’s tragic that Kon-sensei will be producing nothing more.

Some stills from his work. Beautiful. Weird.

Really a sad time for movie lovers everywhere.

Pancreatic cancer, his wife has said.

I loved every show he directed! The opening song for Paranoia Agent is my favorite of all time. I wish I could link to it but I can’t while at work.

I love Paprika’s opening song as well.

An obituaryin the NYTimes by their chief film critic AO Scott. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the first ever obit in the NYT of an anime director. After Miyazaki, Kon has done more to put anime on the critical map in the West than anyone else. His films will be chewed over by critics and scholars for many decades; certainly a legacy to be proud of.

I’m a bit late, but…:frowning:

Satoshi Kon had some brilliant stuff. It’s always sad when a great creative mind is lost. There will be others, of course, but it just won’t be the same without him.

Oh, and here’s the full version of the Paprika opening, for anyone who wants it. Great song.

I’ve only seen Millennium Actress and Perfect Blue, but I have family members I’d be prepared to offer in exchange.

That’s a damn shame, right there.
