Last Words

I guess everyone wishes that we could have “last words”, but who really gets to have them?

You may not have heard, but a great director died last week. His name was Satoshi Kon and he was an amazing film maker.

A.O. Scott’s lovely obituary for him.

I made a thread about it in Cafe Society, with links to video clips and stills from his movies. This isn’t about his movies, not really, anyway.

That’s all most of us ever knew about him and his death at age 46 came so suddenly, it just blew everyone away. Now, we learn that Satoshi Kon knew he was dying(from pancreatic cancer) for a few months and left an extended document to serve as his last words.

What is fascinating is that it isn’t noble, uplifting, or even filled with pain and sadness. It’s just a document he wanted everyone to read to know how he felt and also why he never told anyone but his wife and doctors about his cancer. He never even told his parents.

I found it such a fascinating read. He admits his selfishness in hiding things and keeping his next movie so secret he doubts it will ever be made. But he also apologizes for his wrongs and tries to explain the way he is.

I just found it so interesting, I thought I’d share it with you. You have to scroll down a bit before his actual Last Words document begins.

Satoshi Kon’s last words - How could I forget May 18 of this year?

I highly recommend you get his movies.

Thank you for sharing this. That was very inspiring to read. He made me both laugh and shed a tear. This is what I call a happy death. He had such a short time to prepare but he did a great job. He was a real hero because of his gratitude. To take the time to say thank you to everyone who meant something to him is amazing as sick as he was.

I don’t know how people “handle” it when they find out so suddenly that they will be dead within the year. He made it 3 months from his diagnosis.

Please let me know if you find a better translation than the one I’ve linked to, by the way.

Here is the original, in Japanese, from his blog.

Amazing man and human being.

Pancreatic cancer. Sounds like the worst of all cancers.
