Bottoms gave that speech well after dark last night (sometime after 9:00 PM), well after police cars had been burned and violence was occurring.
Fuck yes, the protesters who weren’t participating in the violence and looting should have gone home, and they should’ve gone home well before the mayor told them to. Because, little known fact apparently, peaceful protest is no longer possible once the riot starts.
ETA: I’ve no beef with the protests or protesters at all. I’m just suggesting the thing they could’ve done to most help the cause was to have gone home. Protest again later.
As I pointed early in the thread, I was expecting pea brained right wingers to miss the item that leaders understanding why rioters act does not mean that they approve of the rioting.
**octopus **was just being helpful by demonstrating that some octopuses do have smaller brains, just like several right wingers.
I don’t care about police cars, they can be replaced. A friend of mine took a non-lethal shot to the face last night, I care about that. I gather she’ll keep her eye. She’s a journalist and was on the job when a cop shot her in the head. MAGA
You are wrong. I was saying what facebook people are posting. I meant it’s one crisis after another, likely more, hence, no more carefree. You completely got my post wrong.
Well, that’s a tactic that’s been used many times to disrupt protests. I don’t know if that’s what happened last night, but it could be. We shouldn’t let it stifle our voices or “prevent” us from raising them in anger.
I’m not saying to stop protesting; I’m saying that staying in an area where group violence is happening, whether you’re going to participate in the violence or not, is no longer peaceful protest and is arguably less effective protest. -Context matters.
Maybe “go home” is too strong, but also understand that there was no large unaffected public area in Atlanta last night where the majority of peaceful protesters could have continued. Staying there endangered the protesters, residents who couldn’t leave and the cops (who had been under orders -which they executed well- to ‘give the protesters room’ to demonstrate). And the crowd also provided cover for the few perpetrating the violence.
Atlanta has had its share of bad policing. But I don’t think the rioting here yesterday was ‘the language of the unheard’ as it was in Minneapolis.
Oh good, moving in military forces and declaring martial law should do wonders to ease tensions in the community.
It is clear to me that Trump and co see violence as a positive in their political favor. They will do everything they can to fan the flames and incite people to rise against them, so that they have an excuse to use draconian tactics to put them down.
The mayor of St. Paul confirmed this morning that everyone arrested in St. Paul last night was from out of state. The riots and burnings have been organized, firefighters have described it as playing whack-a-mole. The governor said flat-out that this is being led by organized agitators. I know reporters are looking into who it may be, I’ve also heard the NSA is digging into the dark web.
There’s something more going on here than protests against another racist murdering cop. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. I just hope that other cities aren’t subjected to this.
At least, not if “we” is anybody over 10 who’s been paying any attention during the last, oh, how many hundreds of years? And quite a few people under 10 didn’t get any choice in the matter, either.
There’s the classic tear-gas chemical which, to be honest, I don’t know a lot about.
But if it’s pepper-spray type tear gas the irritant is oil-based, water has a hard time flushing it away. The fats in milk help wash it out.
Is it ideal? No. Neither are chemical burns to the eyeball. If you haven’t got an emergency shower or gallons and gallons of water (or gallons of gallons of saline solution) then milk will work to reduce the irritation. You can then flush the eyes with water to get the milk out.
Anyone who has ever eaten hot peppers knows that milk soothes the irritation a lot better than plain water does.
