Police cars on fire downtown Cleveland
Aye; knowing that a cop can kill you in broad daylight in public, and it still takes other authority figures a few days to decide to arrest him… that’s a scary way to have to live every day of your life. Then pile on the fact that statistically, he’s very likely to avoid conviction even tho he’s been charged, so the system in place will ultimately decide it was okay for him to kill a person in broad daylight, in public. That’s a VERY scary place to have to live.
Welcome to America in 2020.
Welcome to America since it was founded.
Went driving around my neighborhood and the Northside. Store after store boarded up, either because they already have been looted or to prevent a breach. The one. One. Lone grocery store on the Northside is being protected. Hell, even the local MC groups are out providing protection. Hundreds of people out cleaning up. My mom’s church and other churches have united to provide lunches for the volunteers and boxes of food to anyone who needs them.
Gas station I used to stop at all the time was torched.
AIM posted a video of a group of looters- four fine white boys from Wisconsin who wanted to join in the fun. One called his mommy to come get them.
My city has a curfew, did last night, too. Not that it stops anyone.
DeWine sending in national guard. Glad to be in a suburb.
It does, but the Insurrection Act allows the President to deploy federal forces in the case of an insurrection against a state government.
I believe the President can only do that if a state’s governor requests military assistance, or if no duly constituted authority appears to be governing the state.
Los Angeles is going berserk. Dammit!
I was mistaken. She still has her left eye, it just doesn’t work.
Anyone else watching this, thinking there is something different about these riots? I get a sense they may go on for quite some time longer than expected and maybe they will grow even larger.
I don’t have much of a sense about these things.
I do know that when people show up to a protest in masks, it makes police twitchy because historically they’re conflict tourists just looking for an opportunity to break windows and see how far they can push the police.
Thanks to COVID, people showed up in masks on day 1. So there’s already an element of alarm in the air. I can’t say whether outside agitators have infiltrated, but I know it’s easier to do so when everybody is already wearing masks.
So yeah, add some masks, add some COVID, add the fact that right-wingers have started getting a taste for street-brawling and mindfucking, and I do feel like there are some dangerous possibilities in the air. Could be a long hot summer.
What about the current situation where duly constituted authority does not appear to be governing the country as a whole?
On the PBS Newshour yesterday, someone mentioned something I hadn’t thought about in a while; Robert Kennedy’s speech in Indianapolis informing a largely African-American crowd of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr and urging peace. Supposedly there was no rioting in Indianapolis although there was in many other cities.
The point is the right kind of leadership can make a difference, if only our leaders can rise to it.
The looting doesn’t bother me as much as starting fires, since that puts the lives of firefighters at risk, doesn’t it? Are these fires the type that can be extinguished by shooting water at them from the truck, or do the firemen actually have to go inside the structure? I’m not any kind of expert on fire, I don’t know how big of a risk these fires are to the firemen, but that’s one thing I’m ambivalent about, at any rate. Other than that I support anything that sends a message to the government that cops can’t murder with impunity. If they poke the bear, the riots are the bear biting back. I wouldn’t go out and participate in a riot, but it’s a very understandable reaction, to me.
I hope and wish that that incredible speech will be replayed all over the internet for all Americans to think on during this time of division.
An incredible, impromptu speech. One for the ages. The reaction from the mostly black audience was one of respect and hope. This was back when black folks could still believe that white leaders might actually believe what they said about race relations.
How far we have fallen.
Not sure if this is a wisecrack, but the government of the US is duly constituted. It is the product of a flawed constitution, it is bottomlessly corrupt and horrendously incompetent and criminal, but it is duly constituted.
Assuming that we’ve had enough of this shitty government, and the series of shitty governments that have preceded it, our options are to vote the bastards out, or keep plodding along with impeachments and indictments, or call a constitutional convention, or for states/individuals to declare themselves independent and secede.
If you asked me yesterday if Trump had any remotely plausible grounds to invoke the Insurrection Act I would have said there’s no way. Right now I’d take 10:1 odds that it gets invoked in at least one state within the week. Still not super likely, but I’m not liking where this seems to be headed.
My point is that the duly constituted government’s head person is not governing the country. He hasn’t begun to, not even once, since he assumed office.
It’s common sense really. You see how Antifa and other agitators are never arrested in cities governed by the left. Why lock up your voters? They are needed in November.
Never arrested…
This took me just 30 seconds to find on a search:
IOW, you don’t have a cite because there’s zero actual evidence for your claim.
First a virus to keep us inside. Then curfews. I wonder what’s next?
